Mariefred
Mariefred is a nice small city in the Mälaren, well connected with Stockholm and Södertälje. The Mariefred marina was fully renovated in 2017 and is now offering full quality service.
With less than 4,000 inhabitants, Mariefred would not qualify as a city. However, given its historical importance, it is still often referred to as a city. Mariefred is famous because of the Royal Castle of Gripsholm, which has played an important role all along the history of Swden and the region.
The current castle was built in 1537 by Gustav Vasa. Interiors from this period can still be seen there. It is from Gripsholm that Queen Maria Eleonora escaped in 1640. The castle is hosting the Swedish State Portrait Collection.
