Windows 7 was a well received operating system for Intel PCs, released on October 22, 2009. For over ten years, it provided a standard environment for Windows client workstations to operate many businesses around the world.
However, as of January 14, 2020, Windows 7 went end of support. This means that Microsoft themselves stopped supporting Windows 7 over 18 months ago. In addition, security updates for Windows 7 may only be obtained by purchasing ever more expensive Extended Security Updates (ESU). These in turn will themselves run out in January 2023.
Given the life cycle status of Microsoft Windows 7, the ever increasing security risks of running a decade old OS, and the growing incompatibilities with the modern software packages used by Viewpoint products, and our cloud itself, Viewpoint discontinued the support of Windows 7 for Vista and our Viewpoint One cloud over a year ago.
Vista clients will not be supported on Windows 7.
As such, any customer joining our latest cloud offering, Viewpoint One (with Vista Remote Link), will not be able to use Vista on their Windows 7 workstations.
RDP to Windows 7 Clients is NOT supported.
Applies to customers using our legacy RDP-based cloud solutions, Viewpoint for Cloud (VFC) and Viewpoint Enterprise Cloud (VEC) / RDP Published Apps.
There are severe compatibility issues with the latest versions of RDP Terminal Services we use in the cloud.
Here are some of the options you might choose:
Update your workstations to Windows 10 - (PREFERRED)
This solution provides the best long term security and supportability.
Install Windows 10 Virtual Machines on your Windows 7 Workstations
While your team is in process to update your workstations, you may use VirtualBox, VMware Workstation, etc. to install a Windows 10 VM on which to run Vista.
Install Vista VRL and associated applications on a later Windows Terminal Server to ensure Vista compatibility
You could encounter compatibility issues with this approach unless you specifically downgrade RDP on this server to legacy support.
