What are the Architectural differences between RDP Published Apps (a.k.a. Viewpoint Enterprise Cloud / VEC or Viewpoint for Cloud / VFC) and Vista Remote Link (VRL)?

Both Vista Remote Link (VRL) and Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Published apps are available now for connectivity to Viewpoint's Vista cloud. VRL is our newer, preferred standard that new customers in our cloud are automatically set up to use. RDP is still available for specific use cases, such as some instances of third party consultant access, etc.

How do they work?

    • RDP works by having the actual Vista rich client run in our cloud itself, in the same network as the Vista Server. All the end user sees is a representation of the Vista client, in the form of a picture; a picture that can be interacted with; think a moving image map (circa 1996).

    • VRL works by having the actual Vista rich client run on the end user's local workstation, communicating over the Internet to the Vista server hosted in our cloud. This is very much like Microsoft Outlook works with Office 365.
