We use Citrix / RDP / Virtual Desktops / Published Applications for our end users - will Vista in your cloud work with this?

Often times customers will use a desktop virtualization solution to lift the client-side applications from their end users' workstations and place them in a centrally managed location. This is done to provide cost efficiencies and improved manageability. For the most part, customers who use desktop virtualization solutions, including Citrix, RDP, Virtual Desktops, and Published Applications are satisfied with this solution. However, there are some caveats when attempting to use desktop virtualization technologies with Vista hosted in our cloud.

Critically, Virtualization technologies CANNOT be embedded within Virtualization technologies reliably. You may have heard of or seen companies provide this technology, but keep in mind that this cannot be done reliably.

Why is that important? Well, Viewpoint uses virtualization technology for some of our offerings. Ergo, some of our offerings are NOT compatible with use of RDP, Citrix, Virtual Desktops, etc.; if you use them, there will be problems with Vista in our cloud.

SEE BELOW:

Using with Viewpoint For Cloud (VFC) - RDP:

Viewpoint's Viewpoint For Cloud (VFC) solution provides cloud-hosted Vista and associated applications to our customers and does so quite effectively. VFC is experienced using the RDP protocol: specifically as a Virtual Desktop (a.k.a. Desktop as a Service/DaaS).

VFC is NOT compatible with a customer's on-premise use of Citrix, RDP, Virtual Desktops, etc.

Using with Viewpoint's Enterprise Cloud (VEC) - RDP:

Viewpoint's Enterprise Cloud (VEC) solution provides cloud-hosted Vista and associated applications to our customers and does so quite effectively. VEC is experienced using the RDP protocol: Published applications method specifically.

VEC is NOT compatible with a customer's on-premise use of Citrix, RDP, Virtual Desktops, etc.

Using with Viewpoint One (with VRL) or Viewpoint Enterprise Cloud (VEC) - VRL:

Our most modern delivery method for hosted Vista, whether as part of the Viewpoint One bundle or as part of Viewpoint Enterprise Cloud Vista hosting, is Vista Remote Link (VRL). VRL uses HTTPS to deliver Vista to the actual Vista rich client running on your Windows workstation; it's a real program, like Microsoft Outlook. VRL does not use virtualization technology.

VRL IS COMPATIBLE with a customer's on-premise use of Citrix, RDP, Virtual Desktops, etc.

NOTE: Special considerations must be made when hosting the Vista rich client in a Virtualization environment with shared programs.

Most companies use virtualization in a manner that the actual program files are shared amongst multiple users (e.g. C:\Program Files\PROGRAMNAME).

Please see this link for more detailed information on using Vista's client with VRL, delivered over Virtualization.

With proper planning, you too can experience the power and delight of Vista in our cloud, even over desktop virtualization.
