How do usernames work in your cloud? Are there any limitations?

Author: Eric Vasbinder

In Viewpoint's Vista Cloud, we use AD for user management internally. Our middleware system, however, requires a mechanism in place to correctly link logins via Vista Remote Link (VRL) to AD. This mechanism involves using a different login name for VRL logins that we use for logins into the Cloud Management Portal or the web user portal for RDP.

Though there are changes to how usernames are formatted between our systems, the actual password you will use will be the same.

In addition to changes to how usernames are formatted, please be aware that because of the above, there are limitations to how the username can be created. Specifically, there is an 11 character limit for usernames in our cloud to enable them to work via each method: RDP, web management portal, and VRL.

Here is an example of how the username for a person named Elizabeth Smithsonian might work in our cloud, when her email address is elizabeth.smithsonian@somecompany.com, and her company's unique code in our cloud is ZZZZ:

  1. First, her on-premise email address is too long for us to use it unmodified as a username in our cloud. Normally we would use elizabeth.smithsonian as the basis for her username, but that is too long. As such, we'll need to shrink the name we use; it can't be based her email address.

    1. We will shrink the username portion to be 11 characters: esmithsonia

  2. Second, we now need to adhere to the following standard for her username in each of the three parts of our system:

    1. Cloud Portal Username: esmithsonia@somecompany.com

    2. RDP Login: VIEWPOINT\esmithsonia

    3. VRL Login: VIEWPOINT\esmithsonia

Now that we've made a note of what the usernames should be, we need to ensure the username is updated in the cloud admin portal and in Vista itself.

Please see the following two FAQ Articles on how to update the username of a user in both places:
