من تأتى نال ما تمنى

Objectives are achieved by wise planning and careful consideration

لأخرجنَ من الدنيا وحبكمُ .. بينَ الجوانح لم يشعرْ به أحدُ

When I leave this world, I will depart with your love hidden deep in my heart

a closely guarded secret, to no person revealed

رجع بخفي حنين

He returned empty-handed

إذَا مَا طَمَحْـتُ إلِـى غَـايَةٍ .. رَكِبْتُ الْمُنَى وَنَسِيتُ الحَذَر

وَلَمْ أَتَجَنَّبْ وُعُـورَ الشِّعَـابِ .. وَلا كُبَّـةَ اللَّهَـبِ المُسْتَعِـر

When I aspire to lofty goals

I mount high hopes and discard trepidation

Neither avoiding rugged roads

Nor evading the roaring flames

كان كراعاً فصار ذراعاً

He was lacking in strength, but now

he has the ability to stand firm and resist

سائل الله لا يخيب

He who turns to God for help never fails

وعد الحر دَين

The promise of an honorable person is a debt

that he feels obligated to redeem

الطبع غلب التطبع

An individual's true character is stronger than his assumed behavior

العين لا تعلو على الحاجب

Those who deserve respect should be treated with deferential regard

سحابة صيف تذروها الرياح

A summer cloud that will be dispersed by the wind

وَقَدْ نَكُونُ، وَمَا يُخشَـى تَفَرّقُنا،

فاليومَ نحنُ، ومَا يُرْجى تَلاقينَا

So close we were; unmindful of separation

Today we are apart

With no hope of ever meeting again

الشر من شرارة

One little spark can cause a huge and destructive fire

أكل الدهر عليه وشرب

It is outmoded and no longer in use

وَمَنْ لا يُحِبّ صُعُودَ الجِبَـالِ .. يَعِشْ أَبَدَ الدَّهْرِ بَيْنَ الحُفَـر

He who has an aversion to climbing mountains

Will pass his days and nights in ditches and holes

سيد القوم خادمهم

True leaders are those who serve their people

الضحك بلا سبب من قلة الأدب

It is inappropriate to laugh without an obvious reason

أجرك على الله

May God bless and reward you

إن بعد العُسر يسرا

After affliction and hardship comes freedom from troublesome circumstances

or

Calm descends after the storm

اسْتَقْدِرِ الله خَيْراً وارْضيَنَّ به ... فَبَيْنَما العُسْرُ إِذْ دارَتْ مَياسِيرُ

Ask for God's beneficence and be content

Realizing that in the midst of adversity, well-being abounds

سمن على عسل

Sweet and harmonious

ينفخ في غير ضرَم

Barking up the wrong tree

فَانحَلّ ما كانَ مَعقُوداً بأَنْفُسـِنَا .. وَانْبَتّ ما كانَ مَوْصُولاً بأيْدِينَا

Cords binding our souls, untied

And with our own hands, we severed the ties that joined us together

طفح الكيل

The situation is no longer tolerable

عامِلِ النَّاسَ برأْيٍ رفيق .. والقَ مَنْ تلقى بوجهٍ طليق

فإذا أنتَ جميلُ الثَّناءِ .. وإذا أنتَ كثيرُ الصديق

Treat people gently, advise them with kindness

And meet others with a cheerful face

Thus you’ll win people’s admiration

And your friends will be many, as a result

فلا تعْجلْ على أحدٍ بظلمٍ .. فإن الظلمَ مرتعهُ وخيمُ

Don’t rush to inflict injustice on others

For the consequences of injustice are terrible indeed

بعد اللتيا والتي

After experiencing severe difficulties

في الحركة بركة وفي التواني تهلكة

There is an inherent blessing in right action

whereas procrastination and lethargy lead to ruin

فَعَجَّتْ بِقَلْبِي دِمَاءُ الشَّبَـابِ .. وَضَجَّتْ بِصَدْرِي رِيَاحٌ أُخَر

The blood of youth screamed in my heart

Strange winds raged and raved in my chest

العتاب صابونة القلوب

A gentle remonstration cleanses the hearts

يهب مع كل ريح

He blows with every wind

الصوت العالي من الجوف الخالي

A loud voice is indicative of shallowness

أو Or

An empty container makes much noise

الحديث ذو شجون

In a conversation, one topic leads to other topics

أحبكِ حباً لو يفيضُ يسيرهُ .. على الخلق ماتَ الخلقُ من شدة الحبِّ

My love for you is so great, even a tiny portion of it

Would flood the world, drowning its people in a deluge of love

العقل زينة

A sound mind is an adornment

عنزة ولو طارت

It is a goat, even if it flies

أي i.e

I stand firm behind my statement, no matter what you say

إن البغاث بأرضنا يستنسر

In our land, even the weakling becomes powerful

لا مُشَاحَّة في الاصطلاح

Attempts should not be made to alter well-established terms

أصبح في أضابير التاريخ

He is (it is ) now in the folds of history

صاحب البيت أدرى بالذي فيه

A well-informed person knows best

لا يضيع حق وراءه مُطالب

No right with someone demanding it shall be lost

بِنْتُم وَبِنّا، فَما ابتَلّتْ جَوَانِحُنَــا .. شَوْقاً إلَيكُمْ، وَلا جَفّتْ مآقِينَا

Far from each other

An immense longing for you overtakes me

My tearful eyes never dry

على الباغي تدور الدوائر

An unjust aggressor cannot escape the consequences of his wrong actions

أُبَارِكُ في النَّاسِ أَهْلَ الطُّمُوحِ .. وَمَنْ يَسْتَلِـذُّ رُكُوبَ الخَطَـر

I bless ambitious and aspiring people

And those who take delight in braving danger

أنت للمال إذا أمسكته .. وإذا أنفقته فالمال لك

You belong to your money if you selfishly hoard it

And it belongs to you if you spend it

أي i.e

If you spend it to help someone in need

بكاؤكما يشفي وإن كان لا يجدي .. فجودا فقد أودى نظيركما عندي

Although weeping is futile, yet it relieves

So be generous in shedding tears, O my eyes

For my son, who was as dear to me as you

And who has been forever taken away from me

عُلُوٌّ فِي الحَيَاةِ وَفِي المَمَاتِ .. لَحَقٌّ أَنْتَ إِحْدَى المُعْجِزَاتِ

Attaining elevation in both life and death

An awe-inspiring miracle, indeed

وإذا المنية أنشبت أظفارها .. ألفيتَ كلَّ تميمةٍ لا تنفعُ

Once the clasp of death takes a firm hold

No incantation can ever availسعْيُ الفَتى في عَيْشِهِ عِبادَهْ

وقائِدٌ يَهديهِ للسعادهْ

Endeavoring to earn a living is a form of worship

And a course that leads to happiness

لأَنّ بالسَّعي يقومُ الكوْنُ

والله للسَّاعِينَ نِعْمَ العَونُ

For through endeavor the universe exists and operates

And God’s help is always extended to those who make the effort

قد ذهب الصيادُ عنكِ فابشري .. ورُفعَ الفخُ فماذا تحذري؟

The hunter has gone away from you, O nightingale! So be of good cheer

The trap has been removed, what are you afraid of

خلا لكِ الجو فبيضي واصفري .. ونقـّري ما شئت أن تنقـّري

You are out of danger! So lay your eggs, whistle a tune

and peck and preen as you please

"إذا شاء أراك المعاني اللطيفة

التي هي من خبايا العقل

كأنما قد جُسّمت حتى رأتها العيون..

وإن شاء لطّف الأوصاف الجسمانية

حتى تعود روحانية لا تنالها الظنون."

If he chooses, he can make you perceive the subtle meanings

That belong to the mysteries of the mind

As if materialized and seen by the eyes

And if he chooses, he can soften the physical descriptions

Until they are spiritual and beyond suspicion

اللقم تورث النقم

Bribery breeds resentment

النفسُ مولعةٌ بحب العاجلِِ

The self is fond of the instant fulfillment of desires

كان رجل من النساك يقبّل كل يوم قدم أمه، فأبطأ يوما على أخوته، فسألوه فقال كنت أتمرغ في رياض الجنة، فقد بلغنا أن الجنة تحت أقدام الأمهات

A hermit was in the habit of kissing his mother’s foot every day. One day he came late to his brother hermits; when they asked him the reason for being late, he said: I was turning over and over again in the gardens of heaven, for we have been told that heaven is under mothers’ feet

لا منّان إذا وهب، ولا حقود إذا غضب

If he gives something to others, he never talks about it

And holds no grudges if he becomes angry

كل داء له دواء إلاّ الحقد والحسد

There is a cure for every disease, except ill-will and jealousy

واغتنم الرفصة إن الفرصة .. تصير إن لم تغتنمها غصة

Seize the opportunity as it presents itself

Otherwise it will turn into bitter regret

مازح صديقكَ إن أراد مزاحا .. فإذا أباه فلا تزده جماحا

فلربما مزح الصديقُ بمزحةٍ .. كانت لبدء عداوةٍ مفتاحا

Joke with your fiend if he wants to make fun

But don’t insist if he refuses to joke

For one single joke by a friend

May trigger hostility and breed resentment

إن الكرامَ إذا ما أيسروا ذكروا .. من كان يألفهم في الموطن الخـشنِ

When the noble and generous in spirit prosper

they remember the ones with whom they shared before

life’s difficult situations and humble circumstances

رضا الناس غاية لا تُدرك

It is impossible to please everyone

صائب الحكم واضح الأسلوب

Of sound judgment and clear style

آية في عالم الأدب

A masterpiece in the literary world

يتمايزون في المدارك والأذواق

They differ in perceptions and tastes

ذلك هو وجه الصواب فيما أحسب

That's the correct way from my perspective

The ideas and opinions that occur to the mind and are deeply felt by the soul

لا نرى ضيراً من تشبيه الحصى بالدر المنثور

We do not object to comparing pebbles to scatters gems

يتمنى ما كان يضحك منه ويضحك مما كان يتمناه

He wishes for that which he used to laugh at

and laughs at that which he used to wish for

إلا أن الحياة لتثور على السآمة كيفما كانت العاقبة

Life, however, rebels against monotony, regardless of consequences

احذر عدوك مرة وصديقك ألف مرة

Beware of your enemy once, and a thousand times of your friend

يبعث الشوق إلى المعرفة

It stirs a deep desire for knowledge

يضحك من كل ما بكيت له .. كأن لذاته بآلامي

He laughs at whatever I cried for, as if he takes pleasure in my pains

مكانه في الذروة العالية

His place is in the highest peak

بين الرعيل الأول من شعراء العالم

He belongs to the first class of world poets

الذين أفردتهم العصور وميزهم تاريخ بني الإنسان

That the ages have produced and the history of mankind set apart

الحماقة داء ليس له دواء

Folly is an untreatable diseaseرأيت حلماً مزعجاً ولم أخبره بتفاصيله

I saw a disturbing dream and didn't mention its details to him

تعطشه إلى مجد العالم وعظمته وملذاته

His thirst for the world's glory, grandeur and pleasures

كيف أنسى موضوعاً لا يمكن أن يعدو عليه النسيان؟

How can I forget a subject that defies forgetfulness

واضح الجبين، مبسوط الأسارير، باسم الثغر

He has a bright forehead, a cheerful demeanor, and a smiling mouth

من يتق الله يُحمد في عواقبهِ .. ويكفهِ شرَّ من عزّوا و من هانوا

من استجارَ بغير اللهِ في فزعٍ.. فإن ناصرهُ عجزٌ وخذلانُ

He who fears God, things will turn out well for him

And God will protect him from the evils of the lowly and the mighty

Whoever, when in trouble, seeks the protection of anyone other than God

Will decidedly fail and be disappointingly let down

أنَا الغَريقُ فَما خَوْفي منَ البَلَلِ

Must I be afraid of getting wet when I am drowning

وأثقل محمولٍ على العينِ دمعها .. إذا بانَ أحبابٌ وعزّ إيابُ

The heaviest burden on the eye is its tears, when loved ones depart

with no hoped-for return in sight

قبول السعاية شر من السعاية

Listening to, and accepting slander is worse than slander itself

فاتقوا الساعي، فلو كان صادقًا في قوله لكان لئيمًا في صدقه حيث لم يحفظ الحرمة ولم يستر العورة.

Beware of the slanderer; for even if he speaks the truth, nevertheless he is mean and malicious for not honoring a sacred practice or saving others the embarrassment of having their faults exposed

الحذر قبل الشجاعة

Caution must come before courage

الشاذ لا يقاس عليه

An irregularity is not a standard

قد ضل سواء السبيل

He lost the right direction

من لانت كلمته وجبت محبته

The individual whose words are kind and mild is worthy of being loved

إن القلوبَ إذا تنافر ودّها .. مثل الزجاجةِ كسرها لا يُجبرُ

When hearts are driven apart by lack of love

They become like fractured glass, irreparable

من صبر ظفر

Those who are patient attain victory

أول ما شطح نطح

As soon as he felt he was strong enough

he flexed his muscles and picked a fight

كلام ليّن وظلمٌ بيّن

Although soft-spoken, yet he is clearly oppressive

طيب السريرة، مخلص الطوية، يميل إلى البساطة في كل شيء

Kind-hearted, well-intentioned, preferring simplicity in everything

كان مدققاً في سائر معاملاته، لا يقصّر في ما عليه للآخرين

He was accurate in his dealings, never neglecting his obligations toward others

كان رفيع القدر بين أصدقائه

He was highly esteemed by his friends

الجنة بدون ناس لا تُداس

Heaven without people is neither charming nor inviting

الأعور بين العميان ملك

In the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king

عين عامرة بالصور، حافلة بالمقارنات

An eye that is abounding with images and teeming with comparisons

حياة المرء ثوبٌ مستعار

A person’s life is a borrowed garment

لقد صدق حدسي

My intuition was right

يشعر بالغربة حتى في وطنه

He feels alienated even in his own country

تدل أقوالهم على صفاتهم وأفعالهم

Their words reveal the quality of their character and actions

تضرب الأمثال بوفائه

His loyalty is proverbial

لم يخفر للعهد ذمة

He never betrayed a trust

خير البر عاجله

Charitable donations are best when promptly given

وإني لأطيل العجب من كلّ من يدعي أنه يحب من نظرة واحدة

I am rather amazed by anyone who claims to fall in love from the first look

إن الحبّ اتصال بين النفوس في أصل عالمها العلوي

Love is a communion between souls

originated first in the heavenly abode of those souls

التخيل لا يناقض اليقين

Imagination doesn't contradict certainty

البيت الصغير يتسع لألف صديق

A small home is big enough to accommodate a thousand friends

سكنت حركاته وتعطلت جميع أفعاله

His movements ceased and all his actions discontinued

من كثرة الملاحين غرقت السفينة

The ship sank because it had too many captains on it

إياك وما يُعتذر منه

Don't do anything that may require you to apologize for it

ما يزرعه الإنسان إياه يحصد

As a man sows, so shall he reap

هم معظمون محترمون

They are highly revered and well respected

وهم أهل رفاهية وسعة عيش

And they are affluent and flourishing

ترى التاجر الكبير منهم الذي لا تحصى أمواله كثرة وعليه جبّة قطن خشنة

It is common to see amongst them a wealthy businessman

whose wealth is limitless, wearing a rough cotton coat

حبل الكذب قصير

A lie has a short life

أنتَ ماضٍ و في يديكَ فؤادي .. ردّ قلبي و حيثُ ما شئتَ فامضِِ

You took my heart and now you are going away

First return my heart to me, then you may go wherever you want

حُسْنُ الخلق خير قرين ‏

A noble character is the best companion

لا تدع أحداً يسيطر عليك

Don't let anyone control you

كان منهجاً سائداً وقتها

It was a prevalent curriculum then

لفتت نظره الأضواء والألوان والحركة

The lights, colors, and movement attracted his attention

نسيم نقي يطهر الرئتين من فساد الأجواء

A clean breeze that purifies the lungs from the polluted atmosphere

فالإعلان إذا يقوم على غير الصدق وعلى غير الصواب في أكثر الأحيان

Advertisement, therefore, is based in most cases on

lack of honesty and misinformationخالف هواك ترشد

If you resist your passions you will be rightly guided

لم يستقر اليقين في نفسه

Firm belief hasn't taken root in his soul

الإلتجاء إليه والإستغاثة به

Taking shelter in him and imploring his help

عرفته وفياً نشيطاً متأهباً دائماً للمعونة

I've known him to be loyal, vigorous, and ever ready to help

فَلا الأُفْقُ يَحْضُنُ مَيْتَ الطُّيُورِ .. وَلا النَّحْلُ يَلْثِمُ مَيْتَ الزَّهَــر

The skies hold no dead birds close to their bosom

Nor do bees sip nectar from lifeless flower

ما بني على باطل فهو باطل

That which is built upon untruth is false

ما يلائم طبعه ويوافق مزاجه

What agrees with his disposition and suits his mood

حاجتنا إلى التفصيل أشد من حاجتنا إلى الإجمال

Our need for details is greater than our need for generality

هل قتلت الحضارة الجديدة الحب؟

Has modern civilization killed love

تحرمه صبوة الشباب ولا تغنيه عن تلك الصبوة

It deprives him of the vigor of youth

and doesn't compensate him for that vigor

رب قول أشد من صول

Words can be more effective than waging a battle

إذا هَبَّتْ رياحك فاغتنمها

Seize opportunities whenever they present themselves

أقم ولا تبرح حتى يأتيك أمري

Stay put and don’t leave until you receive my order

شخص فيها طويلاً ينظرها نظر المتعجب

He gazed long at her, viewing her with amazement

وإن محلاً أنتَ فيه لواسعٌ .. وإن زماناً عشتَ فيهِ لطيّبُ

Your presence renders any place spacious and accommodating

and time spent with you is most fulfilling, ecstatically sweet

اطلبوا العلم و لو في الصين

Seek knowledge even in China

ملجأ من الخوف والمرض والموت

A shelter from worry, disease and death

لفّ ذاته برداء الهدوء

He wrapped himself with the robe of calmness

آثار أدبية رائعة

Outstanding literary works

لا أحتفظ من الحياة إلا بشعاع ضئيل

I have nothing left of life save a feeble ray

هجرتكِ حتى قيلَ لا يعرفُ الهوى .. وزرتكِ حتى قيلَ ليس لهُ صبرا.

I kept my distance from you; it was interpreted as a lack of love on my part

And when I paid you a prolonged visit, others said I was incapable of staying away from you

قيود المجتمع المكبلة

The binding fetters of society

البحث العلمي الواعي المتصل

The ongoing and conscious scientific research

التغلب على الفوارق وإلغاء الحواجز العرقية

overcoming the differences and eliminating racial boundaries

فن الحياة السعيدة

The art of happy living

يختلف الأفراد في احتياجهم لهذه العناصر

Individuals differ in their need for these elements

إن غدا لناظره قريب

Tomorrow is near for those who patiently wait

أنجز حر ما وعد

An honorable person keeps his promise

نور الشمس ممنوح للجميع ومع ذلك هناك من يحبذ العيش في الظلام

The sunlight is given to all, yet there are those who prefer to live in darkness

عيون الأطفال الأبرياء التي تعكس نقاءهم الفطري

The eyes of innocent children that reflect their innate purity

أخجلَ الوقاحة وقلة الأدب باللطف والإعتبار

He shamed insolence and rudeness by kindness and consideration

حال دون تفاقم الأوضاع

It prevented the worsening of the situation

طبيب يداوي الناس وهو عليل

Like a physician, treating others while he himself is sick

كانت تجربة رائعة ماتعة

It was a superb and delightful experience

الاعتبار الأول في انتقاء العمل الصحيح

The first consideration in choosing the right work

تخليص الجسم من السموم المتراكمة

Freeing the body of accumulated toxins

إن كنت ريحا فقد لاقيت إعصارا

If you think you are a wind, then you have met a hurricane

باب النجار مخَلَّع

The carpenter’s door is in bad need of repair

طبقاً للحكمة العريقة

According to the ancient wisdom

تبلبل القوم وساد بينهم الهرج والمرج

Chaos came upon the race

القوى الإبداعية تتخذ أشكالاً وتعبيرات تفوق الحصر

The creative powers take numerous forms and expressions

يتخلل كل ذرات الكون

It permeates every atom of the universe

الوجود المطلق الذي يلفه الغموض وتغلفه الأسرار

The absolute existence that’s shrouded with mystery and wrapped in secrets

يقضمون القشرة فيحطمون أسنان فهمهم

They bite the shell and destroy the teeth of their understanding

يخفون قلوباً حزينة تحت مظهر خادع من البشاشة

They hide sorrowful hearts under a veneer of cheer

بالتأني تُدْرَك الفُرَص وتتحقق الأهداف

Opportunities are obtained and goals attained by deliberate patience

بنفسي فَخَرْتُ لا بجدودي

I have taken pride in myself, not in my ancestors

الفضاء هو مستودع كل القوى الشفافة

Space is the repository of all subtle forces

أجمل بكثير من قدرة الخيال على التصور

Far more beautiful than the imagination is capable of conceiving

من وجهة نظر علمية

From a scientific standpoint

جزاء مجيرِ أم عامر

His good deeds were met with ingratitude

المحيطات المليئة بالمياه والأمواج والزبد

The oceans that are brimming with water, waves, and foam

أخذوه في جنح الليل إلى طريق مقفر يكثر فيه السباع

They took him at night to a desolate road that abounds with ferocious beasts

أمضيت الأيام في ارتقاب الموعد

I spent the days in anxious anticipation of the appointment

هل تتبدل أفكار وآراء الإنسان بمرور الزمن؟

Do man’s thoughts and viewpoints change with the passage of time

نام وحلم أنه ضعيف، واهن القوى

He slept and dreamt that he was weak and exhausted

جاءوا عن بكرة أبيهم

They came each and all

الجود بالنفس أقصى غاية الجود

Self-sacrifice is the highest form of giving

الإفراط في التواضع يجلب المذلة

Excessive humility brings about humiliation

أول الشجرة بذرة

A mighty tree grows from a tiny seed

البطنة تزيل الفطنة

Overeating makes the intellect weak and dull

عاطفة عميقة ورقيقة

A deep and tender affection

كان أحد رواد الشعر الوجداني الرومانسي

He was a pioneer of the soulful and romantic poetry

بيتي أستر لعوراتي

My home is more concealing to my faults and shortcomings

تعلم فليس المرء يولد عالما

وليس أخو علم كمن هو جاهل

Learn and acquire knowledge, no one is born learned

A man of knowledge is unlike an ignorant man

كانت معجبة به أشد الإعجاب

Her admiration for him knew no limits

يتلجلج صدى حبه في أعماقي

The echo of his love reverberates in my inner depths

الجزع عند المصيبة مصيبة

Fear and apprehension in adversity make the situation worse

في الحركة بركة

There is a blessing in meaningful and constructive movements

ألحان شجية تلهم أعذب المشاعر

Plaintive tunes that inspire the sweetest feelings

على قدر ما نعطي الحياة تعطينا الحياة

To the extent we give life, life gives back to us

أمضى ليلة هادئة بصحبة أفكاره وأحاسيسه

He spent a quiet night in the company of his thoughts and feelings

كان في غيابه أقوى تأثيراً منه في حضوره

His absence was more effective than his presence

الآن حصحص الحق

The shining truth has now been revealed

مكتبتها الراقية التي تتربع في كبرياء جم

Her superb library was displayed in obvious pride

فلان قد حلب الدهر أشطره

So and so has experienced every aspect of life

اصبر على حزّ الغلاصم .. و نكز الأراقم .. و متون الصّورام .. و البلاء المتلاطم المُتراكم

Bear with fortitude life’ blows and thrusts

And stand firm in the face of raging calamities and gathering misfortunes

حظ في السحاب وعقل في التراب

He is greatly fortunate although he is deficient in intellectual development

خالف هواك ترشد

Don’t obey your whimsical desires and you will be rightly guided

دواء الدهر الصبر عليه

Patience is the remedy for life’s adversities

الحياة هي أكبر مغامرة يمكن تصورها

Life is the greatest adventure that can be imagined

حياته مليئة بالاختبارات الرائعة

His life is full of wondrous experiences

أراك عَصيّ الدَّمع شِيمَتك الصَّبر

I find you to be unusually patient, not easily moved to tears

No need for me to hoard money

أصحابي كالنجوم بأيهم اقتديتم اهتديتم

My friends are like stars

Regardless which one you choose for guidance

You will be guided right

آفة الحديث الكذب

Lying is the pest of conversations

أنفس ما للفتى لُبُّهُ

A sound intelligence is the most precious commodity one can possess

Humbleness is the crown of nobility

ليتني أقدر على رد جميلك

I wish I could repay your kind favors

أسرع من الريح

Faster than the wind

إن الجواد قد يعثر

Even a noble horse may stumble

الأيام دول

The days unpredictably change

بقدر لُغاتِ المرء يَكْثُرُ نفعه

The more languages a person knows

The more helpful he can be

ما استبّ اثنان إلا انحط الأعلى إلى مرتبة الأسفل

Whenever two individuals treat each other rudely and contemptuously

The one with high character stoops down to the level of the other person

لم تزل ماثلة بوضوح في ذاكرتي

It is still vivid in my memory

قادني الدرب الذي سلكته إلى هدفي المنشود

The path I trod led me to my sought after goal

كان على دراية بعدم قدرته على التعبير عن نفسه بيسر وسلاسة

He was fully aware of his inability to articulate himself

أحدثت ثورته النفسية موجات من القلق والحيرة

His inner turmoil created waves of anxiety and bewilderment

في آفاق المعرفة

In the spheres of knowledge

وعي جديد وفهم سديد

A new awareness and a sound understanding

أمواج على صدر المحيط

Waves on the bosom of the ocean

ثقة أعمق بالمستقبل

A deeper trust in the future

ليس للتجارب نهاية

Experiences are endless

عندئذ يدرك العقل أنه غير مقيّد

The mind realizes then that it is not bound

ذو ميول مادية واهتمامات دنيوية

He has material tendencies and worldly interests

الجزع عند المصيبة مصيبة

To be overwhelmed by fear when disaster strikes is disastrous

عندما لا تتحقق أمنياته يقع فريسة الإحباط

When his wishes are thwarted

He succumbs to frustrations

في كل خلية وفكرة وخلجة

In every cell, thought, and throb

كالطفل يبكي ويتحرق على أشياء ليست في متناوله

Like a child, he cries and longs for things beyond his reach

تبزغ الموجة من قلب المحيط ثم تذوب فيه ثانية

The wave rises from the ocean's bosom then melts into it again

كان السفر الدائم من متطلبات عمله

His work demanded constant travel

زجره زجراً هادئاً

He mildly rebuked him

نصيحة مكتسبة من كنوز الحياة

A counsel garnered from the treasures of life

حاول استرضاءها بكلمات ودية وطيبة

He tried to please her with friendly and kind words

كانت ملكة القلوب

She was the queen of hearts

سأعيش رغم الداء والأعداءِ

كالنسر فوق القمة الشماءِ

I shall live in spite of disease and adversaries

Like an eagle atop mountain peaks

بالسحب والأمطارِ والأنواءِ
