منذ قرابة السبع سنوات شرعت بترجمة هذه الأمثال والأقوال والأشعار والعبارات المأثورة في الجمعية الدولية للمترجمين واللغويين العرب وقد لاقت استحساناً وتشجيعاً كبيرين من القراء، حيث حظيتْ لغاية الآن بأكثر من ستمائة ألف قراءة. بعض هذه العبارات أو أبيات الشعر هي من انتقاء و/أو وضع زملاء في الجمعية سُعدت بترجمتها لهم، إنما القسم الأكبر - لا سيما النصف الثاني من هذا العمل - هو من انتقائي وتأليفي.. وجميع المواد هي من ترجمتي. هناك أبيات شعر لم تقترن بأسماء ناظميها لكنها مشهورة وناظموها معروفون. آمل أن يجد القراء في هذا الجهد المتواضع متعة وفائدة وأن يجد طلاب ومحبو الأدب الإنكليزي فرصة للنفاذ إلى مستوىً متقدم من استعمالات اللغة الإنكليزية الأدبية.. والله المستعان وبه التوفيق.

No doubt that life is precious

but even more precious than life itself is your own soul

إن خصلتين خيرهما الكذب لخصلتا سوء

When lying is the better of two traits

Then both traits are evil

النفسُ تكلفُ بالدنيا وقد عَلِمَت .. أن السلامة َ منها تركُ ما فيها

The self is madly attached to the world

Even though it knows that safety lies in being

non-attached to worldly objects

الإعتراف يهدم الإقتراف

Confession lessens the impact of the wrong deed

لا يعرف العودَ كالعاجمِ

Only he who tests the stick by biting it knows whether it is tough or soft

Meaning

A first-hand experience is always authentic and reliable

ماذا يفيدُ الصوتُ مرتفعاً .. إن لم يكن للصوتِ ثمَّ صَدى؟

والنورُ منبثقاً ومنتشراً .. إن لم يكنْ للناسِ فيهِ هُدى؟

And what’s the value of a spreading light

If it affords no guidance to people

تفاءلوا بالخير تجدوه

Be optimistic, believing that good things will come to you, and it shall be so

Instill good manners in your children when they are young

And urge them to behave rightly

That you may be proud of them when they get older

العقول الجبارة التي لا تحطمها الأحداث المريعة

The mighty minds that are uncrushed by disastrous events

لكل عالم هفوة

Even scholars are capable of making mistakes

العلم في الصدور لا في السطور

Knowledge is (kept) in the hearts not in the books

وَما اِنتِفاعُ أَخي الدُنيا بِناظِرِهِ .. إِذا اِستَوَت عِندَهُ الأَنوارُ وَالظُلَمُ

If a seeing person cannot tell the difference between light and darkness

Then what's the use of having eyes

تأملْ في الوجودِ بعين فكرٍ .. ترَ الدنيا الدنية كالخيال ِ

ومن فيها جميعاً سوف يفنى .. ويبقى وجهُ ربكَ ذو الجلال ِ

Look at life with a thoughtful and meditative mind

And this world will appear only a shadow to you

All its inhabitants will someday die

Only the Face of your Glorious God will remain unchanged

ازهد في الدنيا يحبك الله ، وازهد فيما عند الناس يحبك الناس – حديث نبوي

Be non-attached to the world and God will love you

Don’t desire what people have and you’ll be loved by them

إذا اشتبكت دموعٌ في خـدودٍ .. تبيّن من بـكَى ممَّن تَبَـاكى

When tears thickly gather on the cheeks

It is easy to distinguish the ones who are truly crying

From those who merely pretend to weep

من أعانك على الشر ظلمك

He who supports your evil actions wrongs you

لا في العير ولا في النفير

Useless and undependable in all situations and circumstances

لا تغضبنَ على قومٍ تُحبّهمُ .. فليس يُدنيكَ من أحبابكَ الغضبُ

Do not feel angry toward the ones that you love

For anger never draws you close to your loved ones

التواني مفتاح البؤس

Procrastination is the key to misery

لا تظهرنْ ذمَّ امرءٍ قبلَ خبرهِ .. وبعدَ بلاءِ المرءِ فاذمم أو احمدِ

Don’t blame a person before you have had a first hand experience with him

Once you have figured him out, you may then blame or praise him

في القمر ضياء والشمس أضوأ منه

The moon is bright, the sun is even brighter

قلَبَ له ظهر المِجن

All of a sudden he turned against him

الأقلام مطايا الأذهان

Pens are the spirited steeds of minds

غيـرُ مـجـدٍ فــي ملّـتـي واعتـقـادي

نــــوحُ بــــاكٍ ولا تــرنـــم شـــــادِ

In my estimation and firm belief

Crying of weepers and rejoicing of singers

Are equally useless

غنى النفس لمن يعقل أفضل من غنى المال

To those who understand, riches of the soul are better than material riches

والمكر والخداع في النار – حديث نبوي

Cunning and deception are both in hellfire

ومن يكُ ذا فمٍ مُرٍّ مريضٍ .. يجدْ مُرّاً بهِ الماءَ الزلالا

He who has a bitter and sick mouth

Even pure and fresh water will taste bitter to him

من أطاعَ هواهُ باعَ دينهُ بدنياهُ

He who obeys his passions sells his religion (moral principles) for worldly gains

يسقط الطيرُ حيث ينتثرُ الحَبُ وتغشى منازلُ الكرماءِ

Birds gather wherever seeds are scattered

And the houses of the generous-hearted are likewise frequented

النار ولا العار

Rather be consumed by fire than commit a shameful act

وإن أولى الورى بالعفو أقدرهم ... على العقوبة إن يظفر بذي زللِ

Those who are in a position to inflict punishment upon wrong doers

Are the ones that aught to forgive

لَا يَزَالُ الْمَرْءُ عَالِمًا مَا طَلَبَ الْعِلْمَ ، فَإِذَا ظَنَّ أَنَّهُ قَدْ عَلِمَ ، فَقَدْ جَهِلَ

A person may be considered knowing as long as he seeks knowledge

But as soon as he thinks that he is knowledgeable, he becomes ignorant

من كثر كلامه كثر خطأه

He who talks too much, commits many errors

بطن المرء عدوه

A man's stomach is his enemy

واشدد يديكَ بحبل الله معتصماً .. فإنه الركنُ إن خانتك أركانُ

Hold tight to God's unseverable rope, and seek refuge in Him

He is the unshakable Pillar that will never fail you

الفائت لا يُستدرك

The past is gone and is beyond reach

أفسد من الجراد

More damaging than locusts

وبعض القول يذهبُ في الرياحِ

Some words (carry no weight) and hence go with the wind

شر الناس من يُتقى لشره

The most evil of men is he who is feared due to his evil nature

من الشوكة تخرج الوردة

From the thorn bush the rose blooms

أرخص من التراب

Cheaper than dirt

أحمقُ من ماضغ الماء

More stupid than the water chewer

أعطش من رمل

Thirstier than sand

لسانٌ من رُطب ويدٌ من خشب

He is honey-tongued yet tight-fisted

وما كنتُ ممن يدخلُ العشقُ قلبَهُ .. ولكنّ من يُبصِرْ جفونكِ يَعشقُ

Love was never able to enter my heart

but seeing your eyes one inevitably falls in love

أغرّكِ مني أنّ حُبّكِ قاتلي .. وأنكِ مهما تأمُري القلبَ يَفعلِ؟

Are you elated that your love kills me

and that whatever you ask of my heart it unquestioningly obeys

أقُولُ وَقَدْ نَاحَتْ بِقُرْبي حمامَةٌ:

أيَا جَارَتَا، هَلْ تَشعُرِينَ بِحَالي؟

I said as a dove mournfully cooed near me

O neighbor! Are you aware of my situation

Is your cooing in sympathy for my condition

مَعاذَ الهَوَى! ما ذُقتِ طارِقةَ النّوَى

وَلا خَطَرَتْ مِنكِ الهُمُومُ ببالِ

I have tasted of sorrow and separation

More than you have ever experienced

And the worries I have known

Never occurred to you

أضْحَى التّنائي بَديلاً مِنْ تَدانِينَا .. ونَابَ عَنْ طيبِ لُقْيانَا تجافينَا

Separation has taken the place of our close contact

Alienation replaced our sweet getting together

ألاّ وَقَد حانَ صُبحُ البَينِ، صَبّحَنا .. حَيْنٌ، فَقَامَ بِنَا للحَيْنِ نَاعيِنَا

Morning of disunion dawned ominously poignant

As death of a loved one announced

أبَــكَـتْ تــلــكــمُ الـحـمــامــة أم غنّــت .. عـلـى فــرع غصنـهـا المـيّـادِ

Has yonder dove, perching on its swaying branch

Wept or cried

صـاح هـذي قبـورنـا تـمـلأ الــرُحبَ .. فـأيـن القـبـور مــن عـهـد عــادِ

Behold, the earth is filled with our graves

Where are the rest of the graves since Ad's time

وإذا أراد اللهُ نشرَ فضيلةٍ .. طويتْ أتاحَ لها لسانَ حسودِ

If God wishes to make known a virtue that has been forgotten

He inspires an envious person to proclaim it with his tongue

الذئبُ ذئبٌ ولو في ثوبِ حملٍ

A wolf is a wolf even in sheep's clothing

كُلْ على ذوقك، والبس على ذوق الناس

Eat what appeals to your taste and dress in a manner

that appeals to others' taste

لا تحسبنَّ سروراً دائماً أبدا .. من سرّه زمنٌ ساءتهُ أزمانُ

Don't consider life's joys to be unending

One may be happy at times and unhappy at other times

لا سعادة تعادل راحة الضمير

There's no happiness that equals the peace of conscience

إذا أردت أن تُطاع فسلْ ما يُستطاع

If you wish to be obeyed, then ask only for what's fair and reasonable

إذا الشّعْبُ يَوْمَاً أرَادَ الْحَيَـاةَ .. َفلا بُدَّ أنْ يَسْتَجِيبَ القَـدَر

When people choose a noble and worthy existence

The Fates will listen and obey

وَلا بُـدَّ لِلَّيـْلِ أنْ يَنْجَلِــي .. وَلا بُدَّ للقَيْدِ أَنْ يَـنْكَسِـر

Gloom of night will lift and vanish

Fetters will break open

بصرتُ بالراحة الكبرى فلم أرها .. تنالُ إلا على جسرٍ من التعبِ

I thought deeply about the attainment of great comfort

And realized that it can be reached only through the bridge of hard work

فراق الأحباب سقام الألباب

The separation from loved ones sickens the heart

ألذ من المُنى

More delightful than sweet dreams

أكسب من نمل

More resourceful than ants

كأن على رؤوسهم الطير

They were/are utterly still and quiet

الخروف يتقلب على الصوف

He is well provided for

أو

All is well with him

دونه خرط القتاد

It is a task fraught with difficulties

أو

It is a herculean task

غيض من فيض

A drop in the ocean

نزل منه بوادٍ غير ذي زرع

He's barking up the wrong tree

أنشط من ظبي مُقمر

Friskier than a deer on a moonlit night

لا تهرف بما لا تعرف

Do not talk about that which you know nothing about

إن الهوى الهوان

Uncontrollable lust will lead to humiliation

لا خير في أرَبٍ ألقاكَ في لهبٍ

There's no goodness in a goal

that throws you into a burning flame

أساء سمعاً فأساء إجابة

He heard it wrongly and gave a wrong answer

ربك وصاحبك لا تكذب عليهما

Never lie to your God or to your friend

بركة العمر حسن العمل

One's life is blessed by the right performance of duty

تَراهُ إِذا ما جئتهُ مُتَهَلِّلاً .. كَأَنَّكَ مُعطيهِ الَّذي أَنتَ سائِلُه

When you go to him seeking a favor

You'll find him in good spirits

As if you were giving him that which you are asking for

اليوم سلام وغداً كلام

Today we greet each other and tomorrow we'll discuss matters

أيأس من غريق

More desperate than a drowning person

أطغى من السيل

More overwhelming than a mighty flood

لا تقعنّ البحر إلا سابحاً

Don't jump into the sea unless you know how to swim

إذا لم تستطع شيئاً فدعهُ.. وجاوزهُ إلى ما تستطيعُ

If you are unable to accomplish a certain task

Leave it and go on to do something that you can accomplish

عندما يدخل الفقر من الباب يهرب الحب من الشباك

When poverty enters through the door, love flies out of the window

لا تظلمنَ إذا ما كنتَ مقتدراً .. فالظلمُ مرتعهُ يفضي إلى الندمِ

تنامُ عينُكَ والمظلومُ منتبهٌ .. يدعو عليكَ وعينُ اللهِ لم تنـمِ

If you are strong and powerful, do not unjustly treat others

For injustice ultimately leads to regret

Your eyes may sleep while the eyes of the one you abuse are wide awake

Asking the sleepless and ever alert God to inflict punishment on you

أرقّ من رقراق السراب

More subtle than the shimmering mirage

أسرع من اليد إلى الفم

Faster than hand to mouth

أشأم من حفّار القبور (طالت أعماركم)

More ominous than a gravedigger

أمثال شعبية فلسطينية

Still water runs deep

على قد لحافك مد رجليك

Spend only within your means

Don't live beyond your means

القرد بعين أمه غزال

In the eyes of its mother, a baby monkey is a cute fawn

زي الأطرش بالزفة

Like a deaf person in a wedding party

ابن الوز عوّام

A baby goosling is a born swimmer

سبّك من بلّغك السبّ

Whoever conveys an insult to you has already insulted you

الشريف إذا ارتفع تواضع، والوضيع إذا ارتفع تكبر

When an honorable person rises he becomes humble

Whereas a low individual becomes egotistically prideful as he rises

استق الحكمة َ لا يشغلكَ مِن .. أي ينبوعٍ جرتْ يا مستقي

فشعاع الشمس يمتص الندى .. من فم الورد ووحل الطرقِ

Do imbibe wisdom, O thirsty one, regardless of its source

The sun ray absorbs the dew from the mouth of roses

And the mud of the streets

لذة العيشِ صحةٌ وشبابُ

Health and youth are the pleasure of life

عند النطاح يُغلب الكبش الأجم

In butting horns, the hornless ram will be defeated

من هاب خاب

An intimidated person cannot succeed

واسطة العقد

The apple of the eye

العِلمُ زَينٌ وَتَشريفٌ لِصاحِبِهِ .. فاِطلُب هُديتَ فنونَ العِلمِ وَالأَدَبا

Learning is an adornment

And an honor to its seeker

Endeavor, therefore, to acquire

A variety of literary disciplines and knowledge

خاطبوا الناس على قدر عقولهم

Talk to people according to their intellectual capacity

وإذا صاحبتَ فاصحب ماجداً .. ذا عفافٍ وحياءٍ وكرمْ

Befriend only a noble-minded person

Who is upright in character

decent, and generous-hearted

إنه نسيج وحده

He is self-made

أو

He is one of a kind

من هانت عليه نفسه فهو على غيره أهون

It is easy for others not to show respect

To someone who has no self-respect

مثل النعامةِ لا طيرٌ ولا جملٌ

Like an ostrich; neither a bird, nor a camel

طوبى لمن شغله عيبه عن عيوب الناس – حديث نبوي

Blessed is he whose shortcomings keep him

From focusing on the shortcomings of others

لا تحسب الناسَ سواءً متى .. تشابهوا فالناسُ أطوارُ

وانظر إلى الأحجار في بعضها .. ماءٌ وبعضٌ ضمنها نارُ

When you notice a similarity in people

Don't think they are on the same level

For people are of different types and characters

Consider the rocks

There is water in some, and fire in others

هوّن عليكَ ولا تولع بإشفاقِ

Take it calmly and don't indulge in self-pity

في الإعتبار غنى عن الإختبار

No need to go through an experience

If you can learn from the experiences of others

مروءتهم أدقّ من الهباءِ

Their large-heartedness is tinier than minute specks

زامر الحي لا يطرب

The neighborhood piper is not entertaining enough

عذر أقبح من ذنب

An excuse that's worse than a fault

لا تؤجل عمل اليوم إلى الغد

Don't postpone today's work until tomorrow

نقّل فؤادكَ حيث شئتَ من الهوى .. ما الحبُّ إلا للحبيب الأولِ

Let your heart rove and roam

After romantic adventures, if you so choose

True love, however, belongs only to the first lover

خفف طعامك تأمن سقامك

Eat less and you will escape disease

لقد دبَّ الهوى لكِ في فؤادي .. دبيب دمِ الحياةِ إلى عروقي

Your love crawls gently in my heart

with the same tingling sensation that blood makes

when flowing in my veins and arteries

إن يهدمُ العشاقُ ركنَ ولائهم .. فبناءُ حبي راسخُ الأركانِ

Should lovers tear down the edifice of their loyalty

the foundations of my love are unshakable, defying destruction

وَمَنْ لَمْ يُعَانِقْهُ شَوْقُ الْحَيَـاةِ .. تَبَخَّـرَ في جَوِّهَـا وَانْدَثَـر

He who is not embraced by passion for life

Evaporates into thin air and becomes forgotten

فَوَيْلٌ لِمَنْ لَمْ تَشُقْـهُ الْحَيَاةُ .. مِنْ صَفْعَـةِ العَـدَم المُنْتَصِر

Woe unto him who loses interest in life

Victorious void will deal him a slap

الدراهم مراهم

Money is a healing balm

الإعتراف بالحق فضيلة

Admitting the truth is a virtue

عين لا ترى قلب لا يحزن

When the eye sees not, the heart feels no sorrow

طاعة اللسان ندامة

Obeying the tongue leads to regret

صاحب الحاجة أعمى

Need blinds a person's judgment

لو كانَ قلبي معي ما اخترتُ غيركمُ .. ولا رضيتُ سواكم في الهوى بدَلا

Had my heart been with me

I would have chosen none but you

Nor would I have exchanged your love for anyone else’s

ذهب الحمار يطلب قرنين فعاد مصلوم الأذنين

The donkey went out seeking two horns

But returned, instead, with his two ears cut off

دع العوراء تخطاك

Let ignoble traits pass you by

مَا كلُّ ما يَتَمَنّى المَرْءُ يُدْرِكُهُ .. تجرِي الرّياحُ بمَا لا تَشتَهي السّفُنُ

Not everything a person desires may be achieved

The winds blow contrary to the ship's wishes

كما تدين تدان

As you judge (others) so will you be judged

جور القط ولا عدل الفار

The cat's injustice is better than the mouse's justice

راحت السكرة وجاءت الفكرة

The drunkenness is gone and serious thinking has come

شيب وعيب

Committing) shameful acts in old-age

الحر حر ولو مسّه الضر

A man of integrity will always maintain his integrity

Even in the midst of unfavorable circumstances

تاج المروءة التواضع

Humility is the crown of magnanimity

وإني لأهوى النومَ في غير حينهِ .. لعلَ لقاءً في المنامِ يكونُ

O, how I desire to fall asleep at any moment

With the hope of seeing the beloved in my dreams

لا تطلب الرّزقَ في الدّنيا بمنقصةٍ

فالرّزقُ بالذُّلِّ خيرٌ منه حِرْمانُ

Don't resort to disgraceful means

When seeking your livelihood in this world

For deprivation is better than sustenance

Acquired through humiliation

المالُ يمضي وتبقى بعده أبداً

على الفتى منه أوساخٌ وأدْرانُ

Dishonorably acquired) money)

Will someday disappear, but it will leave behind it

Unclean spots and indelibly soiled marks

كن ابن من شئت واكتسب أدباً

يُغْنِيكَ مَحْمُودُهُ عَنِ النَّسَبِ

It matters not whose son you are

As long as you acquire a literary discipline

Its commendable nature will compensate you

For not belonging to a distinguished lineage

إن الفتى من يقول ها أنا ذا

ليسَ الفَتَى مَنْ يقولُ كان أبي

The manly man is he who confidently says: here I am

Not the one who boasts: My father was

أَبْصَرُ مِنَ الْوَطْوَاطِ بِالَّليْلِ‏

Has a sight keener than that of a bat's at night

أَبْقَى مِنَ الدَّهْر

More lasting than eternity

وكُنْتُ إذا اسْتُودِعْتُ سرا كَتَمْتُهُ .. كبيض أَنُوقٍ لا يُنَال لها وَكْرُ

And whenever someone would trust me with a secret

I would hide it and make it beyond reach

Like the eggs of an eagle whose nest is remote and inaccessible

كالبحر يقذف للقريب جواهراً .. كرماً ويبعث للغريب سحائبا

In generosity, he is like the sea

That freely dishes out pearls to those near it

And sends rain-laden clouds to those who are distant from it

جمع أشتات العلوم

وارتفع مقداره

He acquired the diverse branches of knowledge

And was highly esteemed

أبكى من يتيم

Tearier than an orphan

أَضاعُوني وَأَيَّ فَتىً أَضاعُوا .. لِيَومِ كَريهَةٍ وَسِدادِ ثَغرِ

وَخَلَّوني لِمعتَرَكِ المَنايا .. وَقَد شَرَعَت أَسِنَّتُها لِنَحرى

They lost me and great was the loss they sustained

For I was the one to rely upon in times of misfortune

And to defend the portals of entry against enemy raids

They left me alone to struggle with death for my own life

While the unfriendly fates aimed their javelins at my chest

رب رأس حصيد لسان

One's tongue may cause him to lose his head

لا تدخل بين البصلة وقشرها

الترجمة الحرفية:

Don't get between the onion and its peels

والمعنى:

Don't put your nose where it's not wanted

أرقّ من النسيم

Softer than the gentle breeze

أبهي من الفرقدين

Brighter than the two luminaries

تَرْكُ الذَّنْبِ أيْسَرُ مِنْ طَلَبِ التَّوْبةِ‏‏

Abandoning sin is easier than seeking repentance

لا تحاربْ بناظريكَ فؤادي .. فضعيفان يغلبان قويا

Fight me not with your two eyes

For two weaklings can beat and defeat a strong one

الْجَرْعُ أَرْوَى وَالرَّشِيفُ أَنْقَعُ

Drinking water in one long draught quenches the thirst faster

Whereas sipping it in small quantities is more satisfying

جاءَ على غُبَيْراءِ الظَّهْرِ

He came dejected and utterly thwarted

رُبَّ قولٍ أَشدُّ من صَوْلٍ

Words can be more effective than weapons

حسبُك من شر سماعُه

It's enough to hear about evil

أي i.e

No need for you to see it or get embroiled in it

بحسن المعاشرة تدوم المحبة

Acts of kindness foster and perpetuate love

هو ابن بجدتها

He possesses a thorough knowledge of the matter

اشتدي أزمة تنفرجي

Reach your peak, O crisis, and your impact will then dissipate

الْعِلْـمُ يَـرْفَـعُ بَيْتًـا لا عِمَادَ لَهُ .. وَالْجَهْلُ يَهْدِمُ بَيْتَ الْعِزِّ والشَّرَفِ

True knowledge raises mansions even without foundations

Whereas ignorance destroys the mansions of honor and good reputation

ألا شَاهَتِ الْوُجُوهُ

May the ugly faces be unblessed

لا ماءَكِ أَبقيتِ، ولا دَرَنَكِ أَنْقَيتِ

You used up all your water

without even cleansing your defilement

وكل يدَّعي وصلاً بليلى .. وليلى لا تقر لهم بذاكا

Everyone claims Layla's love

Yet Layla refuses to acknowledge such assertions

و الشيب أزهار الشباب فما له .. يخفى و حسن الروض في الأزهار

Gray hair is the blossoms of youth

So why should it be concealed

When blossoms are the beauty of flower gardens

أَبْلَغُ مِنْ قُسٍّ‏

More eloquent than Shakespeare

In the original, more eloquent than Qiss, who was a celebrated Arab orator

تَسقُطُ بِه النَّصِيحَةُ عَلَى الظِّنَّةِ‏

By constantly advising him

He is made suspicious of the motives

خير الغنى القـُنوع وشر الفقر الخضوع

Contentment is the best wealth

And subservience is the worst poverty

اختلط الحابل بالنابل

Things became utterly confused

تمخض الجبل فولد فأرا

The mountain was in labor

And gave birth to a mouse

This saying reminds us of the English saying: Much ado about nothing

تَحْسِبُهُ جَادّاً وَهْوَ مازِحٌ‏

You think he is serious when he is only joking

أَتْبِعِ السَّيِّئَّة الْحَسَنَةَ تَمْحُها‏

Follow the bad deed with a good deed and it will erase it

i.e. the good will erase the bad

تَحَلَّلَتْ عُقَدُهُ‏ أي سكن غضبه

His anger has subsided

الفضل يعرفه ذووه

Virtue is recognized by virtuous people

متاركة السفيه بلا جوابٍ .. أشدُ على السفيهِ من الجوابِ

Not answering an insolent individual

Is a more forceful and effective way than answering him

خـفـف الــوطء مــا أظــن أديــم الأرض

إلا مــــن هــــذه الأجــســادِ

Tread softly, walk gently

For I believe the soil of this earth

Is nothing but the crumbled dust of these bodies

ما لا يتم الواجب إلا به فهو واجب

That which is indispensable to fulfilling an obligation

Is also an obligation

كيْفَ أُعَاوِدُكَ وَهَذَا أَثَرُ فَأَسِكَ

How can I come back to you

When I still bear the scar of your axe

درء المفاسد أولى من جلب المصالح

Warding off corruptions is better than gaining benefits

لاَ تَكُنْ أَدْنَى العَيْرَيْنِ إلَى السَّهْمِ

Don't be the nearer of the two quarries to the arrow

وينشأُ ناشئ الفتيانِ فينا .. على ما كانَ عوّدهُ أبوهُ

Our young grow up thinking and behaving

As he has been taught by his father

ثَارَ ثَائِرُهُ‏

He became furious

أثقل من طود

Heavier than a mountain

أثبت من الوشم

More lasting than a tattoo

مَنْ مبلغُ المبلسينا بانتزاحِهمُ .. حُزْناً معَ الدهرِ لا يبلى ويُبْلينَا

Let those who caused this painful separation know

The sorrow they inflicted upon us is forever lasting

We, by it consumed

يخبط خبط عشواء

He does things randomly, in a slapdash manner

من عرف نفسه عرف ربه

He who knows himself knows his Lord

لا يُشَقُّ له غبار

He is matchless

أحبكَ حُبين حبُّ الهوى .. وحبُّ لأنكَ أهلٌ لذاكَ

I love you two loves: one is romantic

and one because you simply deserve to be loved

اتسع الخرق على الراقع

Things got out of hand and are no longer manageable

إن مفاتيح الأمور العزائم

A firm resolve is key to initiating a new course of action

تركتهم في حيص بيص

I left them confused, troubled, and powerless to extricate themselves

جزاهُ جَزَاء سِنِمَّار

He rewarded him with ingratitude

جاؤوا بقضهم وقَضِيضِهِمْ

They came, each and every one

جَعَلْتُهُ نُصْبَ عَيْنِي

I watched him very closely

قَدَحَ الْخَبَرَ فِي صَدْرِهِ

he was shaken by the news

إذا جاء القدر عمي البصر

When fate strikes, it defies human ingenuity

لقد ألقيتك في كهف النسيان

You no longer exist in my memory

فإن كنت لا تدرى فتلك مصيبة .. وإن كنت تدرى فالمصيبة أعظم

It is a disaster if you don't know

And a greater disaster if you do know

لاحَتْ في عَبوسَتهِ بَوادِرُ الانْفِجارِ

His frown indicated that he was about to explode

الرأي قبل شجاعة الشجعان

Wise judgment is preferred over the bravery of the brave

لا راحة لمن لا تعب له

He who doesn't work hard doesn't know how to enjoy rest

الثروة تأتي كالسلحفاة وتذهب كالغزال

Wealth comes crawling like a tortoise

And leaves bounding like a dear

حج والناس راجعون

Too little too late

الحق يعلو ولا يعلى عليه

Truth always triumphs

ما هكذا يا سعد تورد الإبل

That's not the way to do it

زر غباً تزدد حباً

Visit sparingly and you will be loved dearly

أطمع من أشعب

He is extremely greedy

بعد الشدة يأتي الفرج

After affliction comes relief

يضحك بعبِّه

He laughs in his sleeve

رأيتُ رجالاً يضربون نساءهُم .. فشُلّت يميني حين أضرب زينبا

I have seen men beat their wives

May my right hand be paralyzed if I should ever beat Zainab

الثروة تأتي كالسلحفاة وتذهب كالغزال

حج والناس راجعون

الحق يعلو ولا يعلى عليه

ما هكذا يا سعد تورد الإبل

Self-conceit is a sign of ignorance

As luck would have it

سكت دهراً ونطق كفراً

He maintained a long silence then uttered the wrong words

الإجتهاد لا ينقض بمثله

The ability to reason and discern is not annulled

By the self-same ability to discern and reason

سَنَا إلَى مَعَالِي الأمُورِ

He aspired to great prominence

على أَعْراقِها تَجري الجيادُ

Nobility is by an exalted character bred

إذا كان ربُّ البيتِ بالطبلِ ضارباً … فشيمةُ أهلِ البيتِ كلِّهمُ الرقصُ

If the head of the household is a drum beater

The household members must then be dancers

أو

Like father, like son

الشَّاةُ المَذْبُوحَةُ لاَ تألَمُ السَّلْخ‏

A dead horse feels no pain

القوي يعمل والضعيف يتمنى

The strong person acts while the weak person only wishes

من أطاع غضبه أضاع أدبه

Whoever obeys his anger loses his manners

أيَا جَارتَا، ما أنْصَفَ الدّهْرُ بَينَنا!

تَعَالَيْ أُقَاسِمْكِ الهُمُومَ، تَعَالِي!

O my neighbor, the dove

Life has not dealt fairly with us

Come hither, that I may share

My uneasy feelings with you

وعند جهينة الخبر اليقين

He is a very reliable source of information

يؤذن في مالطة

He is marching to the beat of a different drum

نعم المؤَدِّبُ الدهر

Time is the best disciplinarian

اِشْتَدَّ بِهِ الْهُيَامُ

He is love smitten

كن كالنخيل عن الأحقاد مرتفعاً ... بالطوبِ يُرمى فيرمي أطيب الثمر

Rise above hate and hostility

Like palm trees that tower high above the ground

And when stones are hurled at them

They send down sweet and luscious fruit

شق عصا الطاعة

He revolted and refused to obey orders

العدل أساس الْمُلْك

Justice is the fundamental principle of governing

إن الغريق بكل حبل يعلق

A drowning person clutches at a straw

ويل للحسود من حسده

Woe to the envious person, his envy will turn against him

والقول ينفذ ما لا تنفذ الإبرُ

Words penetrate deeper than needles can ever reach

اللسان أجرح جوارح الإنسان

Of all of man's organs, the tongue is the most cutting

رأيتُ بها بدراً على الأرض ماشياً .. ولم أرَ بدراً قـّط يمشي على الأرض

In her, I saw a full moon walking on earth

Though never before have I seen a moon on earth walking

القوي يعمل والضعيف يتمنى

The strong person acts while the weak person only wishes

من أطاع غضبه أضاع أدبه

الظفر بالضعيف هزيمة

Victory over the weak is defeat

ما عنده طائل ولا نائل

He has nothing to show for

الناس لبعضها

People are meant to stand by each other

إن أخاكَ من آساك

Your true brother is he who helps you in your hour of need

مجد التاجر في كيسه و مجد العالم في كراريسه

The merchant's honor is in his purse

And the scholar's honor is in his books

وما أكثر الإخوان حين تعدهم .. ولكنهم في النائبات قليلُ

You might think that you have many friends

But very few of them will stand by you when disasters strike

إن القذى يؤذي العيون قليله .. ولربما جرح البعوض الفيلا

Little specks of dust hurt the eyes

Even a mosquito may cut into the elephant's skin

بذات فمه يفتضح الكذوب

The liar is exposed by his own mouth

قفي ودعينا قبل وشك التفرّقِ .. فما أنا من يحيا إلى حينَ نلتقي

Stop and bid me farewell before separation becomes a reality

For I am unlikely to live until we meet again

الطمع ضر ما نفع

Greed hurts rather than helps

الهموم بقدر الهمم

Worries and distress come in proportion to the ability to withstand

أيَضْحَكُ مأسُورٌ، وَتَبكي طَلِيقَةٌ،

وَيَسْكُتُ مَحزُونٌ، وَيَندبُ سالِ؟

Must a prisoner laugh while a free bird weep

Shall the sorrow-filled be quiet

While the indifferent wail

لله در الحسد ما أعدله؛ بدأ بصاحبه فقتله

How fair envy is, how unbiased

It destroys, first and foremost, the very one who harbors it

ومن فـاتهُ التعلِيمُ وقت شبابهِ ... فكَبِّـر عليه أربعاً لِوفاتِهِ

He who doesn’t apply himself to study and learning in his youth

His life will be as good as lost

لو عرف السبب، بطل العجب

Puzzlement and curiosity cease once the reason is known

تَهَارش الأعْدَاء

The enemies growled and tore at each other like dogs

إن الله يمهل ولا يهمل

God gives (a chance) but never forgets

أي i.e

God gives offenders a chance to repent and reform

but never fails to exact punishment if they persist in their wrong actions

في سعة الأخلاق كنوز الأرزاق

An upright character attracts abundance and prosperity

وقـبـيــحٌ بــنـــا وإن قـــــدُم الــعـــهد

هــــــوان الآبــــــاء والأجـــــــدادِ

It is unbecoming of us, disgraceful

To show a lack of respect for our fathers and forefathers

Although separated from us by ages

أقل الناس سروراً الحسود

Of all people, the envious person is the least happy

إن من البيان لسحرا

The eloquent use of language is bewitching and captivating

بلغ السيل الزُّبَى

The situation is no longer tolerable

أعدى من العقرب

More hostile than a scorpion

ما الدهر إلا هكذا فاصبر له

Such is life, so have the capacity to endure it

سرّك من دمك

Your secret is a part of your blood

لَقد كنتُ أوْلى مِنكِ بالدّمعِ مُقلَةً،

وَلَكِنّ دَمْعي في الحَوَادِثِ غَالِ!

O (dove), my eyes are more deserving

Of shedding tears than yours

My tears, however, are, in adversity, hard to flow

لا صديق لملول ولا وفاء لكذوب

An apathetic person who shows a lack of interest is not a friend

Nor a habitual liar can ever be trusted

من راقب الناس مات هماً

He who observes others with great concern

Will be consumed by anxiety and uneasiness

سر إن استطعت في الهـواء رويـداً

لا اخـتـيـالاً عـلــى رفـــات الـعـبــادِ

Walk leisurely on air, if you can

Not self-conceitedly, on peoples’ mortal remains

He ran away from death, only to fall into it

الزقاق ضيّق والحمار رفاس

The lane is narrow and the donkey is kicking

أي i.e

Things are difficult as they are, so don't make them more difficult

عند البطون تذهب العقول

Right judgment is befogged and confused by hunger
