Dear Parents,
Thank you for joining us for your child’s student-led conference! It was wonderful to see him/her take ownership of his/her learning, sharing accomplishments, goals, and reflections with such confidence. Your child did a fantastic job guiding us through his/her work and discussing areas of strength and growth.
In Literacy, we will be launching a new unit that focuses on Research skills and this unit aligns with Science as they continue to research on their chosen animal of study. In addition, third graders will be working in book clubs to study and explore different animals’ adaptations. They will engage in comparative analysis so we will see our third graders not only collecting facts but also growing their ideas by adding all the knowledge they collected from their research and inquiry. We will be reading non fiction books, however, they should continue to read fiction books as well.
In math, we will continue to explore subtraction strategies. Third graders will strengthen their skills on subtracting three digit numbers. We will be using strategies based on place value, properties of the operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction to add and subtract fluently. Reading: Third graders are navigating Nonfiction and Fiction books. We encourage students to explore the nonfiction questions and use their reading response books to document their understanding and thinking.
Learning Goal
Our readers will start the research unit by reading nonfiction books. The students will learn about different animals. They will know that researchers look over various books and organize them from the easiest to the hardest text. They will look at the table of contents, illustrations, and they will pay close attention to the subtopics.
Learning Goal
Escribir textos informativos.
Los escritores iniciarán una nueva unidad de escritura informativa. Eligirán un tema de su preferencia y enseñarán a otros a través de la escritura.
En casa los escritores pueden elegir un tema del que saben mucho y escrir del mismo.
Learning Goal
Students practice rounding and their computational estimation.
Students review place value with thorusands to get ready for rounding. Practicing with adding, subtracting 3-digit problems and practicing 2 step story problems.
Learning Goal
Third graders will be launching a new unit in Social Studies that focuses on the concept of globalization. To launch this unit, third graders will engage in asking questions about globalization. The inquiry will focus on the questions they generated. Also, we will use the KWL and the 3-2-1 routines to nurture their curiosity on globalization.
At home, we could be looking where products and services come from e.g your shoes, your shirt, your car, and your favorite toy. Explore the question Why is globalization important?
Learning Goal
In this lesson, we will learn to change unhelpful Worm thoughts to helpful Caterpillar thoughts when we make mistakes or face a challenge.
Identify a fixed mindset Worm thought and swap it for a growth mindset Caterpillar thought.
Identify how growth mindset Caterpillar thinking changes my emotions and actions.
Describe how mistakes and challenges are okay and useful to improve my skills and relationships.
Think about a challenging situation when you made a mistake or failed to reach a goal. What kind of thoughts (Caterpillar or Worm thoughts) and emotions did you have? What happened as a result?
