Dear Second Grade Families,
As we end October and head into our 4th month of school, it is incredible to reflect on all the students have accomplished so far this school year. The students have developed their mathematical skills in place value identifying and regrouping hundreds, tens and ones. They have worked on using number lines to solve 2 digit addition equations. As readers and writers, they have been exploring non-fiction texts and are working on writing thier own final expert chapter book for a Gallery Walk presentation. In Content, the students are wrapping up their unit on Global Awareness by creating symbols that reflect their understanding of rights and responsibilities in the world community. As always, they are learning ways to show their Tiger Traits, more specifically, they have been discussing compassion this month. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our parents who helped create our UAE booth for the Fall Festival. The decor and tower building activity was out of this world. We also appreciate the assistance from our parents who helped the teachers in the evening to run the activities and hand out stickers and candy. It was a great show of collaboration. Finally, the 2nd and 4th graders celebrated Halloween playing Bingo and enjoying delicious treats at the picnic. It was a truly spooky time and we were so happy for the treats donated by our ANS families. We can't wait to see what's coming up next in 2nd Grade!
Learning Goal
Non Fiction Writers set goals to make their books better.
In Phonics, students have been tackling multisyllabic words by using their finger to do a slow word check, looking for the consonant -le blend in words like and silent consonants in words like knowledge, writers and gnat where the k, w and g are silent. Nonfiction Writers will work on the 2nd book thinking about their audience, 2nd graders. Keeping in mind things that would interest them. Writers will make sure they add descriptions, expert words, drawings with labels, meet the author etc.
For Phonics practice, read and spell the Word Wall words: people, terrible, and trouble. At home students will be able to write a nonfiction book with the audience in mind. Asking yourself, what else does my audience needs to know? What are they learning from my book?
Learning Goal
Learning Goal
Students count, combine, and organize
objects and numbers based on mathematical concepts such as place value, multiples of 5 and 10,
We start unit 3 in Math. Students will use “skip-jumps” of 1, 5, and 10 to reach a given target on the number
line. The goal of the activity is to arrive at the intended target by using as few
skip-jumps as possible.
Learning Goal
Understand the important relationship between plants and animals.
Scientists are going to begin observing birds to practice making observations and asking scientific questions about what they observe.
Making strong observations at home. What birds do you see in your backyard? at the park?
Learning Goal
Responding to Our Emotions With Thoughts and Actions
Friends describe different feelings, thoughts, and actions that may occur in response to a situation.
Discuss with your family: Think about a situation where you were really proud of something you had done. What did you think? How did you act?
