In Phonics this week, the students started Unit 2: Big Words Take Big Resolve and learned to spot challenging words, tackle them and check them while reading the vocabulary of animal fact cards. In Writing our Tigers will learn that in order to write interesting long non fiction books they will choose topics that they know and care a lot. 

In Phonics, while reading a non-fiction text, students should not give up when they come to an unfamilar word. Learning new words are a way to expand a student's vocabulary and knowledge. Writing: Students will create a non fiction book using all the prior knowledge they have about a topic they like in order for them to write lots about.

Esta semana, los estudiantes inician el taller de lectura donde aprenderán a utilizar estrategias como la exploración de la portada, contraportada y tabla de contenido para activar conocimientos previos, así como la interpretación de palabras y gráficos, como imágenes, mapas y diagramas, para mejorar la comprensión y análisis del contenido.

• 1.Exploración de un libro informativo: el lector elige un libro informativo en casa y explora la portada, contraportada y tabla de contenido, luego escribe responde hace y responde a preguntas: ¿Qué me enseñara este libro? ¿Qué cosas ya se sobre este tema?

• 2.Activación de conocimientos previos: el lector hace una lista de lo que ya saben sobre el tema del libro que han elegido. (Esto puede incluir experiencias personales o información de otros libros)

• 3.Interpretación de gráficos: el lector busca gráficos, imágenes o diagramas en su libro informativo y explica cómo ayudan estos recursos a comprender mejor el contenido del libro.

• 4.Lectura Activa: estudiantes leen una parte del libro y marcan palabras o frases importantes.

Students will be introduced to a new model called Number line, which they will use to solve addition problems. Students will be exposed to two different types of number lines: Open and closed Number line.

In the Symbols unit, second graders get to know symbols of government and culture.

Students can look for symbols in everyday life (e.g., flags, logos, emblems) and create a list or draw them. Have them explain to a family member what they think each symbol represents.

Friends will practice relaxation techniques in response to situations. We will discuss that strong emotions can make it hard to think clearly and take safe, kind, or useful actions.

Make a list with your family of relaxation stategies that you can use at home when you feel strong emotions.
