Dear Second Grade Families,
The students have been working very hard in all areas and showing their enthusiam for learning. In Mathematics they have been estimating and measuring the length of objects using a variety of tools and learning the terms of inches, feet and yards. As readers, they have been practicing strategies to tackle multisyllabic words including looking for vowels, breaking words into their parts and asking for assistance from an expert. This week, we are launching the next Science unit focusing on the Properties of Materials and conducting experiments. At the end of the month, we will participate in our Field Day on Tuesday, January 28 starting with our Parent Engagement at 7:00 am. Watch out for more details regarding this fun day that you can be a part of with your child.
Learning Goal
Using Problem-Solution to hold together a whole book. Also using Inference to fill gaps in Stories.
In Phonics, the students are learning strategies to spell bigger, longer and challenging words. Students look for the biggest part they can to build a word in the easiest, and fastest way. As well, they can write a bigger word by building it syllable by syllable using lines for each part. Listening for each sound and including a vowel in each syllable part can help them with the trickiest part of words. In Reading longer books, our 2nd graders will focus on the most important parts, by jotting down on sticky notes the problem of the story and what the character does to solve it. They will also ask and answer questions related to the content of the story. They have to remember to retell only the most important parts, not every little detail.
Students should practice reading and writing these Snap Words; themselves, maybe, really, favorite, together, several. At home our Readers will read longer fiction books and use the Story Elements chart in order to hold onto their thinking. Provide the Story element chart.
Learning Goal
Learning Goal
Select and use the appropiate tool for measuring the lenght of an object.
Students will start a new module about measuring in which they will be introduced to new tools and meauring units like inches, feet and yards. They will estimate and mesaure the lenght of objects using a different unit each time.
Make a string that is one yard long. Then find different objects in your house and measure them using the string. Make a list of objects that were exactly one yard long, shorter than 1 yard and longer than 1 yard.
Learning Goal
Students will explore the physical properties of a variety of different objects.
Scientists are going to experiment with different materials to identify its properties (strength, water resistant, transparency, flexibility).
Learning Goal
Describe ways to show empathy and caring to someone.
In this lesson, tigers will explore the difference between receiving an empathetic response versus a response aimed at fixing the emotion. While an empathetic response acknowledges and validates the feelings of the individual, a "fixing" response often tries to immediately solve the problem or offer advice without truly understanding the emotional experience.
Model different ways to show empathy, such as asking follow-up questions to show interest, offering to listen to something they have to say, or providing encouragement.
