Dear 5th Grade Families,
This week, readers focused on recognizing strong arguments supported by evidence and distinguishing between arguments and persuasion. They explored texts to identify whether arguments were one-sided or presented multiple perspectives and practiced quick flash debates to clarify their thinking.
Students also began researching deeply to become experts on their chosen topics, asking, “How might this information apply to the argument?” as they read.
We encourage our fifth graders to continue reading for at least 45 minutes per day to keep improving their reading levels.
Thank you for your continued support!
Warm regards,
Learning Goal
Readers will continue working in their research groups having in depth discussions, growing ideas and synthesizing information.
Reflect on the kind of conversations that can pay off in discussing issues, such as analyzing different perspectives, recognizing which position is more convincing, and how they can hold each other accountable for supporting their ideas. Shift from taking in information to reflecting on that information to grow ideas. Summarize arguments by using their own words to express the most essential parts of the writer’s argument, while being careful to not distort or change what the writer meant.
Readers are encouraged to use a reading log to track their stamina and volume. By writing down the title, pages, or time spent reading, they can see their progress and feel proud of their hard work. Setting small goals will help them read more each day and improve their reading skills. The more they track, the easier it gets, and the more fun reading will become!

Learning Goal
Students will explore the natural world and create a model that demonstrates how gravity affects an object in their environment, using unique and creative observations.
Scientists observe the world around them to better understand how things work. Gravity is a natural phenomenon—a force that is always at work in nature. Students will step into the role of scientists by going outside to find examples of how gravity affects the natural world.
Research experiments that demonstrates that gravity is always pulling things toward the earth.
