Dear Parents,
We’ve had another exciting week in the classrooms, filled with learning and growth. Students are really diving into our lessons with enthusiasm, and it's wonderful to see them so engaged. In phonics, they have been exploring rhymes and patterns that can help them to spell tricky words. In reading, they have read different series books and learnt how to envision characters, setting and events. In math, they started working with larger numbers and indentifying hundreds, tens and ones . In addiiton, our science lessons have sparked curiosioty as they learn and make observations about plants. Learning Goal
Tigers will note text topics and activate background knowledge. They will use comprehension strategies to understand and learn from a text.
In Phonics; students are learning how looking for Powerful Patterns related to rhyming can help with reading, spelling and writing. Students need to carefully look and listen for rhymes when reading. In this week's lessons, they learned that rhyming words may sound the same, but spelled differently. For example: door-before, queen-bean. In Reading our 2nd graders will Become Experts in Nonfiction, they will practice the nonfiction skill of reading closely, with attention to detail. First they will do this with a reading partner. Then we will guide students to the library and select books in their baggies. They will read a book and then share information with their reading partner. We will call their attention to the graphics. Remind them to preview the books making sure to jot down any background information on sticky notes.
In Phonics, students can practice making lists of rhyming words using one of the Powerful Pattern endings: -ill, -ot, -at, -ay, -ick, -ake, -ight. In Reading our 2nd graders should read Nonfiction books for 25 minutes, then jotting down any important information.
Learning Goal
Learning Goal
Counting and Modeling 2- 3 digit numbers
Mathematicians will keep estimating, counting and comparing quantities in order to develop place value skills. In addition, they will start measuring using tens.
Students can practice place value skills using this activity: Place Value Practice Take a look at the Home connections for next week: Unit 2 Module 1 Home Connections Session 3-5
Learning Goal
Scientists will be observing plants and thinking about what plants need to grow and survive.
Scientists keep making strong observations and writing scientific questions about what they notice.
Plant Watch: Students can choose a plant in their home or garden to observe every day. They can draw or write down what they see, paying attention to details like changes in the leaves, color, size, or shape. Encourage them to notice even the smallest changes.
Learning Goal
Friends and learners will learn about what causes feeling
Friends and learners will listen to a story and discuss how we can have different feeling about situations. We will think about the cause of emotional reactions.
Practice thinking about situations that you did not expect. How does that changes your feelings? What can you do to feel better? For example: You want to go to a park and were very happy, but it starts raining. How do you feel now? What can you do to feel better?
