Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
We are so excited to welcome our students back to school after the holiday break! We hope your time with family and friends was filled with joy and relaxation. As we start this new semester, our classroom is buzzing with enthusiasm for all the exciting learning experiences ahead. This week, students are refreshing their understanding of our school and classroom expectations, setting the stage for a successful and productive term. Thank you for your continued support as we dive into another wonderful chapter of growth and discovery!
Learning Goal
Readers will evaluate argumentative texts and work in groups to research an issue, setting up right from the start the study of a debatable issue that can be considered from multiple perspectives.
Readers will recognize that a good argument is supported by reasons backed up by evidence. Readers will figure out when a text is making an argument versus trying to persuade. Readers will notice when texts are one-sided or offer different sides of an issue.
Readers will focus initially on texts that lay out the argument clearly and then read about both sides. Readers will let their research spur quick flash-debates, which can help them clarify their thinking and know what further research they need to do. Readers will start researching deeply about an issue, including background information, to become authorities on that issue. Whenever they read, they would ask, ‘How might this information apply to the argument?
Readers are encouraged to use a reading log to track their stamina and volume, whether reading fiction or nonfiction. By writing down the title, pages, or time spent reading, they can see their progress and feel proud of their hard work. Setting small goals will help them read more each day and improve their reading skills. The more they track, the easier it gets, and the more fun reading will become!
