Dear Kindergarten Families,
Another wonderful week has gone by, and our kindergarteners continue to grow as readers, writers, and mathematicians. We recently launched a new reading unit called We Are Readers, where students will immerse themselves in exploring the world through books while practicing their reading routines. In Spanish, they’ve been sharing and talking about their favorite toys during show and tell.
Next week in phonics, we will begin a new unit called Word Scientists, where students will engage in word exploration and discovery.
In math, our young mathematicians have been introduced to a new tool called the Number Rack. They explored numbers between 0 and 10 by building and using their very own 10-bead number racks.
A BIG thank you to everyone who attended our Growing Language Learners Parent Engagement session. Your participation is fundamental to supporting your child’s success in school. If you were able to attend, we would greatly appreciate it if you could take a moment to fill out the survey and provide us with valuable feedback. Your input helps us improve and better meet the needs of our students and families.
NOTE:
As we celebrate the season, the kinder team would like to invite you to help us bring some autumn and/or Halloween cheer to our classroom! If you would like to donate any autumn or Halloween-themed decorations, we would greatly appreciate your contribution. Feel free to send them with your child.
Thank you for your support in making our classroom a festive and welcoming space for the students!
Learning Goal
ELA: Readers can learn from books about the world and share with their partner.
Phonics: students to demonstrate letter recognition and sound identification through their artwork and gallery walk.
ELA: Readers are going to be learning how to read books about the world choosing WOW pages and they are going to learn the routine of private reading and partner reading to share what the learned.
Phonics: During the week, students will begin by creating their own letter artwork inspired by "An Alphabet Art Gallery," using various materials to represent their assigned letters. After completing their creations, they will display the artwork around the classroom for a gallery walk, allowing peers to appreciate each piece. Following the gallery walk, students will participate in assessments on letter sound identification to check their understanding. The week will conclude with a review of snap words.
ELA: Prepare a reading corner for kids to practice private reading and partner reading with parents or a stuff animal. Here is a chart that you can display in the reading corner
Phonics: Students can create an art project by drawing or cutting out pictures of items that start with each letter of the alphabet. They should label each picture with the corresponding letter and write the item's name, focusing on the beginning sound. This activity reinforces letter names and sounds while encouraging creativity!
Learning Goal
Alfabeto
Learning Goal
Mathematicians will continue working on developing number sense and the ability to count on from 5.
Mathematicians will continue to work their numbers to 10. They will have further opportunities to visualize a group of 5 and to think about numbers between 5 and 10 as 5 and some more. They will be using craft sticks, ten frame display cards, tally cards and graphing activities to count on from 5.
Students are encouraged to collect sticks to show talling at home. Make groups of 5's and count on.
Learning Goal
Students will enhance their observational skills by controlling their movement speed and focusing on details in their environment through guided activities and nature observations.
The young scientists engage in a movement game to practice controlling their speed—alternating between fast and slow. They learn to connect their speed with keen observation by noticing details, such as the color of a peer’s shoes.
Next, they venture outside to observe nature, sitting quietly in specific spots to enhance their observational skills. They start with brief observation periods and gradually increase the time. After each session, the scientists collaborate with a partner to discuss the details they noticed. This activity fosters their ability to observe closely and deepens their connection with the natural world.
Scientists can find a quiet outdoor spot in their yard and sit quietly for 5 minutes. they can use this time to observe their surroundings carefully. Afterward, they will write down or draw three details they noticed, such as colors, shapes, or the movement of animals. Scientists Challenge themselves to notice something they have never seen before!
Learning Goal
Friends will learn the importance of being their best selves.
Friends will recognize their own emotions and those of others. They will connect emotions, thoughts, and actions.
Think about this questions at home and disscuss with your family. How do you feel when you do something kind for someone? What are your emotions, thoughts and actions? How can the other person feel, think and act?
