Dear 1st Grade Families,
Another amazing and golden week of classes in first grade. For our first graders it’s a period of magical discovery as they develop alertness and observation skills like mathematicians. Students enjoyed the challenges of “represent addition and subtraction on a number line”. Through jumps, frog races and hungry sharks we had been increasing in developing problem-solving skills that are crucial for decision-making, critical thinking, and logical reasoning.
In reading and writing children begin to spread their wings in getting to know common phonograms that end in blends. They’re feeling confident, independent and eager to take on new challenges in every writing process, so our “Teaching Books” are sharpening their perception of the world. In content, students will be introduced to our new unit: Is the President the most important person in the government? They will explore leaders in our community and will learn about how leaders make important decisions.
All the best !
Learning Goal
Writing: Writers will include a special kind of “morning meeting” in their books, called an introduction. In addition, they will pay attention to vowel sounds they hear inside words they want to write. Phonics: Students will take time to study word parts to help them spell all the way across a word.
Writing: Writers will get ready to make choices about what would make their books the best they can be. Phonics: Readers and writers will work together to show what they know about parts of words, they will use what they know about words parts to help them spell all the way across a word.

Home Connection Unit 4 Module 3 Session 2. Hungry shark subtraction Due on Thursday, January 23
Learning Goal
Students understand the concept of leadership and identify leaders in their lives.
Students will be introduced to our Social Studies Unit: Is the president the only important leader in our country?"
Students can identify who the leaders are in different settings (home, school, etc). They can have a conversation with their family to discuss: What does a leader do? How do we know someone is a leader? Are there different types of leaders?
Learning Goal
Identify behaviors that can maintain or disrupt conversations.
In this lesson, tigers will use Conversation Do’s and avoid Conversation Don’ts during a group conversation game.
Notice when tigers use effective communication skills to keep a conversation going, and reinforce these behaviors.
