This plant is widely distributed in tropical regions. In Java, Tengguli is cultivated as an ornamental plant and has also been cultivated throughout Papua Island. Additionally, it is often planted for the restoration of degraded land and forest recovery. Its wood can be used for building materials, carts, fence posts, agricultural tools, and charcoal, while its bark is used for tanning and dyeing.
It grows well in moist tropical and subtropical areas with an average rainfall ranging from 500–2,700 mm/year, an average annual temperature of 18–29
∘
C, and a pH of 5.5–8.7. It prefers sandy, well-drained soil, under full sun, but is also tolerant of shade. It is commonly found in dry deciduous forests, open forests, and grasslands.
Stem (Batang) has spreading branches, young twigs are smooth.
Leaves (Daun) Consists of 3–7 pairs of leaflets. The shape is ovate to oblong, size is 7–12 cm×4–8 cm, the upper surface is shiny, and the petiole (stalk) length is 5–8 cm.
Flower (Bunga) Axillary, numerous, fragrant, pendulous (20–60 cm long), golden yellow color.
Fruit (Buah) Pod (polong), hanging, smooth, black color, 20–60 cm long, and multi-seeded.
Propagation uses seeds and cuttings.
Seed germination can be accelerated by soaking the seeds for 12–24 hours in warm water, followed by soaking in concentrated sulfuric acid for 45 minutes.
This plant is a slow grower, taking about 8–10 years from planting until it flowers.
Laxative, treats malaria, boils, diabetes, kidney stones, canker sores (stomatitis), dysentery, relieves constipation, hypertension (high blood pressure), and acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
