Rain Lily originates from Mexico, Colombia, and Central America. It is widely cultivated in Southern America, the Southern USA, the Ryukyu Islands, Bhutan, Nepal, and the Solomon Islands. It is named 'rain lily' because it generally grows and blooms after the rainy season. This plant is usually grown as an ornamental and border plant, and is also reported to have properties as a traditional medicine.
Grows well in places with an altitude reaching 1,500 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.). It prefers a slightly sandy or clay texture soil with high organic matter and good drainage. It can live well with full sunlight to shade.
Root: Fibrous root, white color.
False Stem: Has a bulb (layered underground stem), 2–4 cm in diameter, white with a slight brownish tinge.
Leaves: Simple (single), emerges from the root rosette, stalkless (sessile), linear shape, 20–30 cm long, parallel venation, smooth surface, thick, green color. They are elongated, resembling chive leaves.
Flower: Single, trumpet-shaped, bisexual. The perianth (petals and sepals combined) is thin, fused at the base. Stamens number 6, yellow color. The corolla lobes are separate, number 6, yellowish-white color.
Fruit: Has 3 compartments, oblong shape, size 0.5–1 cm long, and green color.
Seed: Numerous, flattened, black, shiny.
Propagation: Generatively (seeds), or vegetatively (separation of bulbs or offsets).
Relieves seizures in children, helps eliminate scars, insect bites, remedy for dizziness, treats insomnia (difficulty sleeping), lowers fever.
Alkaloids (12-acetylplicamine, N-deformyl-secoplicamine, plicamine, 4a-epi-plicamine, secoplicamine, lycorine), β-sitosterol, stigmasterol, β-dauscosterin, heptacosane.
