(Lavendula)
Lavender (lavendel is the Dutch absorption) is a genus of flowering plants in the Lamiaceae family, comprising 25–30 species. This plant originates from the region of the Southern Mediterranean Sea to tropical Africa and eastward to India—the Old World. The genus includes perennials, herbaceous plants, subshrubs, and small shrubs. This plant is also distributed in the Canary Islands, North and East Africa, Southern Europe (especially Southern France), Arabia, and India. Many are widely cultivated and developed in temperate climates as ornamental plants, culinary ingredients, and sources of essential oil extract for commercial purposes. The plant is often found growing wild in areas outside its native range.
Its height ranges between 30–50 cm. Lavender grows well in highland areas, at altitudes ranging from 600–1,350 m a.s.l.. Once grown, it can be transferred to planting bags.
Root: Taproot, fibrous, dirty white to brownish.
Stem: Woody, rounded and elongated, with a diameter of 3–4 mm or more. The stem length reaches 60–80 cm and grows upright. The plant's stem also has many branches which are useful for leaf growth.
Leaves: Round-oval, elongated, with parallel venation, a tapering base, and serrated margins. They have a smooth and soft surface, colored light to dark green. Additionally, the underside of the lavender flower leaves has prominent, whitish venation.
Flowers: Small, bluish-purple, composed of several florets, typically 6–10 florets arranged in a spiral shape. The flowers grow at the tips of the branches and have many fine, whitish hairs.
Propagation is done using seeds, as well as tiller (shoot) separation and cuttings.
It alleviates insomnia, relaxes muscles, soothes stomach irritation, makes the mood more stable, treats hair loss, wards off mosquito bites, and helps with other health disorders.
