Tuberose originates from Mexico. Its spread to Indonesia began with the arrival of the European and Chinese nations. It is commonly cultivated as an ornamental plant and a cut flower because of its beautiful flowers and distinct aroma, especially at night. This plant also possesses properties as a traditional medicine. Furthermore, its flowers can be consumed as an ingredient or complement in cooking.
Tuberose grows in regions with altitudes of 700–1,500 m a.s.l., but grows optimally at altitudes of 100–900 m a.s.l.. It prefers open environmental conditions with air humidity of 75–90%, a daily temperature between 16–27
∘
C, and rainfall of 1,900–2,500 mm/year. It is suitable for planting in andosol soil types, with a texture ranging from clay to sandy loam, and a pH of 5–5.7.
Root: Fibrous root system.
Stem: Consists of a main stem and a pseudostem (tuber). The main stem is whitish-light green, covered with fine fibers.
Leaves: Flat and elongated, glossy green. There are reddish spots at the base.
Flowers: Compound (inflorescence), with 5–12 florets emerging on the flower stalk. They are white with a slight reddish tint at the tip, bloom at night, and have a long-lasting fragrance
Propagation is done vegetatively (using flower tubers/bulbs).
The tubers are taken from production plants that are more than 2.5 years old. It is best to store the tubers for 1–2 months before planting (to accelerate shoot emergence).
It is a remedy for boils (furuncles), swelling (edema), cataracts, influenza, insomnia (difficulty sleeping), acts as an antipyretic (fever reducer), and treats rheumatism and sore throat. It also possesses antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
Sapogenin, flavonoids, geraniol, nerol, farnesol, eugenol, spirostanol, furostanol glycoside (steroid), methyl benzoate, and 1,8-cineole.
