Peppermint
(Mentha piperita L.)
This plant is mostly grown in Europe. It has been used for medicinal purposes for many years. Peppermint is well-known for effectively relieving stomach aches and is often used as a main ingredient in warm beverages like tea. Peppermint is also an ideal remedy for relieving headaches. The first description of this pungent mint was made in 1753 by Carolus Linnaeus. In both the East and the West, this pungent mint has been recognized as a traditional medicine. In 2004, this pungent mint was designated as an important herbal plant
It grows well in locations with an altitude of 100–700 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.). It prefers moist areas, with an annual rainfall of 2,000–4,000 mm/year, full light intensity, temperature of 20–30 °C, loose, well-drained soil, and a soil pH of 5.5–7. It is intolerant of drought and waterlogged conditions.
Generally, the mint plant can grow well in moist areas and forests at an altitude of 150 to 900 meters above sea level. Mint leaves require fertile, well-drained, and loose soil (not hard or dense).
This plant can be produced well in lowlands at an altitude of 100–400 m.a.s.l. and medium altitudes at 400–700 m.a.s.l. Suitable land for planting mint leaves is sandy soil, fertile, full of organic matter, and well-drained, with a soil pH of about 5.5 to 7.0. The appropriate climate for growing mint leaves is one that has an annual rainfall of 2,000 to 4,000 mm, a wet season of about seven months, and a dry season of about three months, a humidity level of about 70 to 80 percent, full light intensity, and a temperature of 20–30° Celsius.
Leaves (Daun) Light to dark green, ovate (egg-shaped) and serrated at the edges, clearly striped with leaf veins. The upper surface is hairy and the lower surface is smooth, the leaf tip is pointed, leaf length ranges from 1.3–5.5 cm, the leaf shape is lanceolate, and the leaf margin is shallowly crenate.
Stem (Batang) Square (quadrangular) shaped, erect, soft, branched, and purplish in color. In tropical areas, the stem growth is erect or slightly creeping. The plant height ranges from 30–60 cm.
Root (Akar) Shallow root system that rapidly forms shoots.
Propagation is done by cuttings (vegetative) and seed sowing (generative).
Thins mucus, helps relieve cough, soothes the throat, eases sore throat (pharyngitis), treats IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), reduces abdominal pain, alleviates discomfort (stress), and reduces the severity of IBS.
