Garlic Chives is widely cultivated and consumed in Southeast Asia, China, and northern and eastern India. In these countries, Kucai is also consumed as a diet food. The name Kucai originates from the Hokkien language, "Ku-chhai." It is commonly used in Chinese cuisine. Besides being consumed as a vegetable, Kucai is also used for traditional medicine and beauty treatments, containing beta-carotene, which is good for brightening and improving skin health.
Kucai can grow in moderate and tropical climates, at altitudes up to ± 1,700 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.). It grows best in fertile, moist, but well-drained soil, with a soil pH in the range of 6–6.8 (tolerating 5.3–8.3). It is suitable for sunny conditions to slight shade.
Root: Consists of an elongated bulb with root fibers growing on the bulb.
Bulb: Slender, conical shape, growing in dense clumps, white color.
Leaves: Hollow tubular shape, straight, narrow and flattened, green color, 15–50 cm long.
Flower: Pale white color, star-shaped with six petals, the flower is surrounded by a thin protective leaf (bract).
Fruit: Capsule shape divided into 3 compartments with 1–2 seeds. It turns brown when old and splits open when dry.
Seed: Small, black, and shiny.
Propagation: Through seeds or the separation of shoots, tillers (anakans), or clumps.
Quality Seedlings: Obtained from healthy, pest-and-disease-free plants that are 2–3 months old.
