Mickey Mouse
(Ochna serrulata (Hochst.) Walp. )
The Mickey Mouse plant originates from South Africa. It has been widely cultivated outside South Africa as an ornamental plant and a live fence. The flowers of the Mickey Mouse plant are also used as lucky flowers for the New Year in Vietnam. This is because the plant sometimes only flowers once a year. This plant is also believed to have medicinal benefits and is used as a traditional remedy, such as by the Zulu people in South Africa, who use root decoctions to treat children suffering from bone diseases or gangrenous proctitis.
This plant has good adaptability, growing well in open areas or in dense forests. It requires full sun to partial shade. Initially, the plant growth is very slow, but once established, it grows quickly. A suitable climate is an area where the temperature never drops below -2 °C. This means the plant is intolerant of frost or ice.
