This is an indigenous Indonesian plant originating from Irian Jaya (now Papua), and is also found in Papua New Guinea. Mahkota Dewa has also been cultivated in Java and other regions. This plant is often used as a traditional medicine, especially by the communities of Malaysia and Indonesia.
This plant grows fast and wild in wet highlands, mountain slopes, fields, and roadsides where the air is cool. It prefers humus-rich, well-drained soil with a neutral to alkaline pH, and receives full sun or shade.
Root: Taproot, yellowish-brown color.
Stem: Round, rough surface, sap-containing (gummy), brownish bark, sympodial branching.
Leaves: Simple (single), opposite arrangement, oblong shape, pinnate venation, smooth surface.
Flower: Compound inflorescence, white color, growth scattered on the stem or leaf axils.
Fruit: Round shape, consists of skin, flesh, shell, and seed. The flesh is white, fibrous, and watery. Young fruit is green, mature fruit is maroon red.
Propagation: Generatively (seeds) and vegetatively (air layering/marcotting).
Seed Propagation: Done by sowing first in a sand medium. Plant the seed at a depth of 1 cm and a spacing of 3 m x 3 cm.
Air Layering: Marcotts (cangkok) can be transferred to the planting medium after 6–8 weeks.
Aids in the process of skin tissue formation, treats impotence, dysentery, allergies, tumors, cold remedy, rheumatism, diabetes, liver or relieves jaundice, and cancer, also used as a cosmetic or beauty ingredient.
