It is widely distributed to India, Bhutan, southern mainland China, the Pacific Islands, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Australia. In Indonesia, it is commonly found in Java, Sulawesi, and Maluku. It is generally used for natural food coloring. It is often planted as a hedge plant and a houseplant, serving as an air purifier indoors.
It thrives up to an altitude of 1,000 m a.s.l. and prefers mountainous areas or areas near running water (wells, small rivers). Suji is widely planted in house yards as a hedge plant. This plant likes moist soil with good drainage in a sunny location.
The root is a taproot, colored dirty white.
The stem is erect, woody, transversely grooved, and dirty white.
The leaves are single (simple), alternate, lanceolate with a tapering tip, the base clasps the stem, the margins are entire, 16–20 cm long, 3–4 cm wide, with parallel venation, and are dark green.
The flowers are compound (inflorescence), located at the branch tips, in the form of a raceme (tandan), and are purplish-white.
