The Henna plant originates from the Arabian Peninsula, South Asia, parts of Southeast Asia, Carthage, parts of North Africa, and North Australia. It is also found in tropical regions of the Americas, Egypt, India, and the Middle East. In Indonesia, this plant is found in Java, Bali, Sumatra, Maluku, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and Nusa Tenggara. It is commonly utilized as an ornamental plant, medicinal plant, and a source of natural dye for coloring hair, nails, silk, and wool fabric. The compound eugenol in henna leaves can act as an antioxidant and antibacterial compound in the body.
A dry tropical and subtropical plant that grows at altitudes up to 2,000 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.), with an annual daytime temperature between 19–27 °C, an average annual rainfall between 500–1,500 mm/year, and a soil pH between 5–7.
Stem: Erect, branched. The twigs have thorns.
Leaves: Simple (single), opposite arrangement, elliptical (oblong) shape, long, grayish-green color, the leaf buds are red.
Flower: Panicle shape, light yellow color, and fragrant.
Fruit: Round shape, numerous, clustered.
Seed: Flattened round shape.
Propagation: Done vegetatively (cuttings) and generatively (seeds).
