White Milkwort / Billygoat-weed / Orosne
(Polygala paniculata L)
Billygoat-weed originates from tropical America, ranging from the regions of Mexico to Brazil. In the 17th century, it was introduced to Tropical Africa, Indo-Australia, and the Pacific Islands, including Southeast Asia. This plant has a balsam-like odor, which is why it is called 'balsam plant' by communities in East Kalimantan. The plant is believed to possess medicinal properties, especially its roots. The roots have a sweet, fragrant, warm, and soothing taste.
Billygoat-weed grows at altitudes up to 2,250 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.). This plant is light-loving and can grow in various soil types, especially sandy and moist soil. It is commonly found in abandoned fields and plantations. Billygoat-weed flowers year-round in wet climates.
