Red Ginger
(Zingiber officinale var. Rubrum )
Red ginger has been widely used by indigenous peoples in Indonesia, such as the Tolitoli, Javanese, Banjar, Madurese, Batak, Dayak, Bugis, Sundanese, and Chinese tribes. Red ginger is used to treat nausea, vomiting, impotence, low libido, colds, bloating, and coughs. The sharp aroma and spicy taste of red ginger are believed to have superior properties compared to other ginger subspecies, prompting people to cultivate it. The widespread use of red ginger in society and ethnopharmacological studies of ginger are thought to be the driving force behind increased research into this ginger variety.
Ginger plants can grow well at altitudes of around 200-600 m above sea level. However, ginger plants can also grow well up to an altitude of 900 m above sea level. The average rainfall required for ginger plants is around 2,500-4,000 mm or with 7-9 wet months. The optimal annual temperature for ginger growth is around 25-30 ºC. Good soil conditions for ginger plants are fertile, loose, and rich in organic matter. Suitable soil types are red-brown latosol or andosol. Meanwhile, good soil textures for ginger growth include loam, sandy clay loam, silty loam, and clay loam. For acidity, the required soil pH is 6.8-7.4. However, ginger plants can still grow well with a minimum soil pH of 4.5.
The root length is 17.03-24.06 cm, and the root diameter is 5.36-5.46 mm.
The rhizome length is 12.33-12.60 cm, the height is 5.86-7.03 cm, and the weight is 0.29-1.17 kg.
The stem is somewhat hard, round and small, reddish-green, covered by leaf sheaths, and the plant height is 14.05-48.23 cm.
The leaves are alternate and regularly arranged. The leaf color is darker than that of elephant ginger or small ginger. The upper leaf surface is lighter green than the underside. The leaf area is 32.55-51.18 mm, the leaf length is 24.30-24.79 cm, and the leaf width is 2.79-7.97 cm.
