Mint
(Mentha spicata L)
This plant originates from Europe and Asia, especially the Middle East, the Himalayas, and China, but it is also a characteristic plant in countries in West Africa, North America, and South America. Mint leaves are a medicinal plant with a strong and refreshing taste, often used as an addition to salads. The plant yields an essential oil that can be used as a flavoring or scent in candies, ice cream, beverages, and toothpaste.
It grows well in places with an altitude of 100–700 m a.s.l.. It prefers moist areas, annual rainfall of 2,000–4,000 mm/year, full light intensity, a temperature of 20–30C, and soil conditions that are loose (gembur), well-drained, with a soil pH of 5.5–7. It is intolerant of drought conditions and waterlogging.
Generally, the mint plant can grow well in moist and forested areas at an altitude of 150 to 900 meters above sea level. Mint leaves require fertile, well-drained, and loose soil (not hard or dense).
This plant can produce well in the lowlands at an altitude of 100–400 m a.s.l. and the medium highlands at 400–700 m a.s.l. The suitable land for planting mint leaves is sandy, fertile soil, full of organic matter, and well-drained with a soil pH of around 5.5 to 7.0. The appropriate climate for planting mint has an annual rainfall of 2,000 to 4,000 mm, about seven wet months, and about three dry months, a humidity level of about 70 to 80 percent, full light intensity, and a temperature of 20–30C.
Root: Taproot, white.
Stem: Square-shaped, purple, green, and hairy.
Leaves: Simple, elliptic, with a rounded tip, arranged opposite and decussate (bersilang), and serrated margins. The leaf color is purplish-green, the surface is hairy, and it has a sharp aroma.
Flowers: In a slender spike, with individual flowers colored pink and white.
Seeds: Relatively large, measuring 0.62–0.90 mm.
Propagation uses stem cuttings. Seeds are rarely obtained because the plant rarely flowers.
The appropriate planting time is December–January.
It treats digestive issues, colds and flu, headaches, helps fade "panda eyes" (dark circles), alleviates fatigue, treats respiratory tract problems, hemorrhoids, and stomach aches. It possesses carminative, antispasmodic (muscle relaxant), diuretic (increases urine output), antibacterial, and antioxidant activities.
β-carotene, β-sitosterol, borneol, ethanol, eugenol, geraniol, menthol, methionine, niacin, thiamin, and essential oils (carvone, limonene, cineole, β-pinene).
