This plant originates from Madagascar and is distributed in tropical regions such as Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, and others. It is widely used in various countries as a medicinal plant to treat various diseases. Cocor Bebek is also often grown as an ornamental plant in tropical and cooler areas. Additionally, its leaves can be used as shampoo.
It can grow wild on cliff edges, roadsides, and places with rocky soil in hot and dry areas. It grows from the lowlands up to an altitude of 1,000 m a.s.l., with an average annual rainfall of 1,000–2,000 mm/year and an average annual temperature of 22.5 ºC. It prefers full sun as well as shady places.
Stem: Erect, soft, quadrangular (four-sided), and jointed (beruas-ruas).
Leaves: Green, thick, and succulent (watery), simple, ovate (oblong) with a short stalk.
Flowers: Compound (inflorescence) in the shape of a panicle. The calyx is cylindrical and reddish-purple, and the corolla (petals) is funnel-shaped and red.
Fruit: Capsule (kotak), purple with white spots.
Seeds: Small, white.
Propagation of the Cocor Bebek plant can be done using its leaves.
The picked leaves will form plantlet buds (kuncup-kuncup anakan) in the notches (toreh-toreh) along the leaf margins.
It treats bruises (contusio), acts as an antipyretic (fever reducer), treats stomach pain (nyeri lambung), boils, is antirheumatic, treats hemorrhoids (wasir), is anticancer, and treats fever.
Alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, sitosterol, α-amyrin, β-amyrin acetate, bryophyllin A, arachidic acid, astragalin, benzenoid, behenic acid, steroids, and butadienolides.
Ingredients:Prepare 1 handful of fresh Cocor Bebek leaves, 1 lime (jeruk nipis), and 5 tsp of water.
Preparation:Pound or mash the Cocor Bebek leaves, add the lime juice and water. Pound and stir until thoroughly mixed and forms a paste (bubur).
Application:Apply the paste to the child's forehead as a compress. Replace the mixture when it starts to dry. Repeat until the child's fever drops. It can also be applied to the child's entire body.
