Aromatic Ginger most likely originates from India, and is widely cultivated across Southeast Asia, South China, the Archipelago, and as far as the Moluccas. It is one of the few species of plants developed as native Indonesian medicinal herbs and has a fairly high economic value. Besides being a medicinal plant, it is also utilized as a kitchen spice, a food ingredient, and in other refreshing beverages.
Grows optimally in areas with an altitude of 50–600 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.), rainfall of 2,500–4,000 mm/year, and soil textures ranging from loam to sandy clay loam. It is usually found in lowland or medium altitude areas where the soil is loose and not overly saturated with water.
Root: Fibrous root, with round, fragrant tubers called rhizomes.
Rhizome: Cylindrical shape, brownish surface color, soft texture, white flesh color, fragrant, and highly branched.
Leaves: Simple (single), lance-shaped with pinnate venation, green color, the lower tip is purplish, 7.5–9 cm long and 4.5–6 cm wide.
Flower: Corolla is white with a purplish tinge, measuring 2–2.5 cm, the calyx is attached to the rhizome.
Seed: Obtained from old but still fresh Kencur rhizomes. The rhizomes are stored in a place that is neither too bright nor too dark so that they sprout quickly.
Planting Time: The rainy season is the appropriate time for planting.
Remedy for cough, tetanus, headache, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, common cold, body aches (pegal-pegal), compresses for swelling/inflammation, appetite booster, hypertension, rheumatism, and asthma, and has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activity.
