Manggo Curcuma
(Curcuma mangga Valeton & Zijp)
It is a native plant of the Indo-Malaysian region, spread from Indo-China, Taiwan, Thailand, the Pacific to Northern Australia. Some regional names are Temu mangga, kunyit putih, kunir putih, temubayang, temu poh (Javanese), temmo pao (Madura), temu mangga, temu putih (Malay), koneng joho, koneng lalap, konneng pare, koneng bodas (Sundanese), and its foreign name is temu pauh (Malaysian), kha min khao (Thailand). It is named temu mangga because the specific aroma of its rhizome is like the aroma of mango, it can be consumed as a simplicia (sliced, dried and boiled) instant, pickled, candy/sweets, syrup, jam, lalapan (fresh rhizome), and botokan. Temu mangga or kunyit mangga is an empon-empon with properties similar to temu putih. The rhizome is used to treat stomach disorders, treat cancer, and increase appetite.
It thrives best in warm, humid tropical climates, with ideal temperatures between 20–30°C and a minimum annual rainfall of 1,500 mm. Environments such as tropical forests mixed with coconut palms are ideal for cultivating this plant. It requires ample, but not too much direct sunlight. Areas with soft morning light or diffused light are ideal. The soil should be fertile, loose, with a mixture of sand and clay, well-drained, and slightly acidic (optimal pH around 5.5–6.8).
The roots are fibrous and white.
The rhizome is branched, yellowish on the outside, lemon-yellow to sulfur-yellow on the inside, with a distinctive mango-like odor.
The pseudostem is upright, soft, and the underground stem forms a rhizome.
The single leaves have an oval sheath, smooth edges, pointed bases and tips, and pinnate veins, green in color.
The inflorescences are compound, split at the tips, emerging from the base of the leaf stalk. The stamens are white and attached to the corolla. The pistil is cylindrical, with a rounded, yellow stigma. The corolla is white and oval.
Vegetative propagation (breaking the parent clump or rhizome).
The rhizomes are spread out, then covered with a little soil or straw and then watered. After the shoots grow (3-4 weeks), cut the rhizome (consisting of 1-2 buds per cut). Move plants to the garden.
The right planting time is at the beginning of the rainy season. Planting distance 25-40 x 50 cm.
Increases appetite, shrinks the uterus, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, stops bleeding, tuberculosis, stomach ulcers, and treats acne and boils.
Saponin, flavonoid, polifenol, mirsen, steroid, β-osimen, β-pinen, α-pinen, kurkumin, quinone, mycrene.
