Angelonia Lavender
(Angelonia Angustifolia Benth.)
Angelonia is native to Mexico, Guatemala, and Cuba and has been introduced to Ecuador, Fiji, the Gilbert Islands, New Caledonia, Niue, Samoa, and Trinidad-Tobago. The use of angelonia as an anti-inflammatory drug has been documented by indigenous cultures in Latin America. Research has also shown that angelonia also possesses analgesic and antihyperlipidemic activity. It is now cultivated as a widely available annual ornamental plant. Angelonia flowers are used as cut flowers for vases or in bouquets, as they have a long shelf life of 14–18 days, although their color may fade.
The angelonia plant is found in its natural habitat in Mexico at an altitude of 0-2,000 m above sea level and grows best in moist but well-drained soil and a position in full sun. Likes fertile clay soil with a soil pH ranging from 5.5 - 6.2.
Fibrous roots.
The stem is small, non-woody, smooth, and branches abundantly from the base.
The narrow, linear leaves, with sticky glandular hairs and serrated edges, are arranged in opposite pairs and have an apple- or grape-soda-like aroma when rubbed or cut.
The bluish-purple flowers, quite large (2-3 cm), are produced in upright racemes from the leaf axils. They persist for several days on the plant. They are pollinated by bees and bloom freely throughout the year.
The fruit is a brown, subglobose, explosive capsule.
The seeds are small.
Propagation is done generatively using seeds, while vegetatively using stem tip cuttings (which root easily in 7-10 days) and dividing the clumps.
It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic (relieves pain or aches), and antihyperlipidemic activity.
Lupeol, fenol, alkaloid, tanin, flavonoid, saponin, steroid.
