Popping Pod originates from Central America but is now found in many tropical countries in South and Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. This plant is often grown as an ornamental plant and is widely used in traditional medicine.
This plant grows in lowlands up to 700 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.). It can thrive in sandy, hard soil, and soil from mining excavations. Humidity levels range from 40–50%. It grows in areas exposed to full sun and under partial shade.
Root: Taproot, tuberous, brown color.
Stem: Obtuse quadrangular (blunt four-sided) shape, purplish-green color, the surface is covered with short, fine hairs.
Leaves: Simple (single), oval-shaped, blunt tip, thin, flat leaf surface, green color, smooth leaf margin, pinnate venation. Leaf length is ± 12 cm, width is ± 5 cm, and stalk length is ± 2.5 cm.
Flower: Trumpet shape, the base of the corolla is a tube ± 5–6 cm long with 5 notched lobes at the tip, pale blue to purple color. Pistil is single, purplish-white color, 4 white stamens.
Fruit: Tubular shape, pointed tip, ± 2–3 cm long. Young fruit is green, ripe fruit is brown. When ripe fruit is exposed to water, it will burst, detach, and be ejected from the stalk.
Seed: Round, flat, brown color.
Propagation: Generatively (seeds) and vegetatively (stem cuttings).
Remedy for stomach illnesses, worm infections, joint and muscle pain, blood cleanser, whooping cough, fever, common cold, hypertension, male tonic (aphrodisiac), diabetes, urinary stones, wounds, rheumatism, itching, insect and scorpion bites, venereal diseases, tumors, and treats kidney issues.
