Silver Trumpet Tree
(Tabebuia aurea (Silva Manso) Benth. & Hook.f. ex S.Moore)
Tabebuia aurea is native to Northeastern Argentina, Northwest Argentina, Bolivia, Northern Brazil, Northeastern Brazil, Southern Brazil, Southeastern Brazil, West-Central Brazil, Paraguay, Peru and was introduced to the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico. It is one of the most spectacular flowering trees among other flowering trees because the flowers of T. aurea begin to bloom when the tree begins to lose its leaves or blooms without leaves. Tabebuia is commonly planted along roadsides and in parks. In addition to its beautiful flowers, which are commonly used as ornamental plants, this plant has the ability to absorb carbon compounds that are harmful to humans, so it can help clean polluted air. These benefits are not limited to environmental services in the form of air purification, but also other properties for treating several types of diseases.
It grows well in tropical and subtropical regions, in full sun. Tabebuia's native habitat in Brazil is a dry climate, making it highly tolerant of dry weather.
Taproot with underground fibrous roots.
Stems are woody.
Leaves are palmately compound, with five or seven leaflets, each 6–18 cm long, green with silvery scales above and below.
Flowers are bright yellow, trumpet-shaped, up to 6.5 cm in diameter, produced several flowers together in loose panicles.
Fruit is a slender capsule up to 10 cm long.
Propagation can be done generatively using seeds and vegetatively by stem cuttings and grafting. Select mature seeds that usually fall from the tree on their own. Peel off the seed coat and dry them in the sun until completely dry. After that, the seeds can be stored for one month. The stored seeds can be sown in a seedling medium containing soil mixed with compost or manure in a 1:1 ratio. Care for the tabebuia seedlings until they grow to a height of one meter or more. The seedlings can then be transplanted to a larger area.
Anti-inflammatory, anticancer, cures influenza, treats snake bites, anti-edematogenic action, antioxidant, and nephroprotective.
Sterol, alkoloid, flavonoid, 3,4́,5-Trihydroxy-7-methoxyflavone, 3,4-dimethoxybenzoic acid (veratric acid), Methyl cinnamate, β-Sitosterol, Betulinic acid, 6- O -(p-coumaroyl)-catalpol (specioside).
