Banana
(Musa acuminata x Musa Balbisiana)
This plant originates from Southeast Asia, specifically the Philippines to Indonesia. It is widely distributed across the South Pacific, India, Africa, and Latin America. In Indonesia, the Saba Banana (Pisang Kepok) is one of the commercial banana types highly sought after by the community. This banana has many health benefits, one of which is to lower blood pressure.
It grows well from the lowlands to the highlands (altitude of up to 2,000 meters above sea level), with rainfall of 1,500–3,800 mm/year, air humidity of 80–88%, temperature of 22–32°C, and soil pH of 4.5–6.5. It prefers loose soil, good drainage, and high nutrient content.
Stem (Batang) The pseudostem is a tightly and regularly stacked accumulation of leaf sheaths. The true stem is called the corm (bonggol), which is short and located at the base of the pseudostem.
Leaves (Daun) Lanceolate shape, the leaves are scattered (alternate).
Flower (Bunga) Compound inflorescence, where each flower bud is enclosed by a reddish-brown spathe (bract).
Fruit (Buah) A berry, elongated round and curved, arranged like a two-row comb (hand). The skin is green when young and yellow or brown when ripe. The flesh is white or yellowish.
Seed (Biji) Small, round, and black color.
Propagation is done vegetatively using suckers (anakan) and tissue culture products. Suckers are developments from buds on the plant's corm. Propagation material should come from healthy, productive mother plants of good quality.
Boosts immunity and metabolism, improves digestion and blood circulation, lowers blood pressure and stroke risk, reduces facial wrinkles, and is antibacterial (for diarrhea).
Pectin, serotonin, alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, terpenoids, minerals (potassium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, calcium), prebiotic content (fructooligosaccharides).
