Wild Tea
(Acalypha Siamensis)
There are 28 species of this plant that can be found in Southeast Asia. The Latin name for this plant is Acalypha siamensis, and its other names include Siam tea leaf or Wild Tea. Acalypha siamensis is a native plant that grows in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia (Peninsula), Singapore, Sumatra, and Sulawesi.
The Siam Tea plant (Acalypha siamensis) can grow well in dry forests, evergreen or mixed forests, or shrub vegetation. Its relatively abundant and dense canopy can inhibit sound waves passing through it. This makes the plant very suitable for planting in yards that are located next to roadsides.
Siam Tea is a plant with many branches, categorized as a perennial shrub or bush with a height of 1–2 m. The habit of the Siam Tea plant is a shrub with a dense, compact, and strong canopy, and it lives in colonies. It has small leaves that are shiny green.
The stem of the Siam Tea plant is round, brown when old, and has a smooth surface. Another perspective suggests its growth form is a shrub capable of growing up to 4 m tall.
The leaves have short petioles (leaf stalks) of less than 1 cm, are pubescent (puber), serrated along the edges, and are elliptical to oblong with a length of 2–10 cm×width 1–5 cm, arranged alternately.
The female flowers are located at the base of the spike, equipped with large bracts (modified leaves associated with reproductive structures, such as flowers) with toothed margins; the male flowers are subtended by small bracts towards the tip of the spike. The sepals are ovate with about 10 stamens, the filaments are hairy, scale-like, and the female flowers are enclosed in a large herbaceous bract.
The fruit is green and spiky. The fruit is a capsule about 2.5 mm long, covered with long projections.
Propagation is done both generatively (by seed) and vegetatively (by stem cuttings).
It is used to treat fever, intestinal complaints, and kidney diseases; it is said to possess antipyretic properties. Additionally, it can treat conditions such as leukemia and cancer.
The plant contains saponins, flavonoids, phenols, and is known to have the secondary metabolite acalyphaser A, which is a tetraterpene derivative compound belonging to the terpenoid class and is believed to have anticancer properties
