Kemuning originates from Sri Lanka, India, and Myanmar, and then spread to areas including China, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Australia. It is often utilized as a medicinal plant, hedge plant, and ornamental plant. Its flowers have a pungent aroma and can be used to provide fragrance in tea. Additionally, it produces essential oil that can be used as a perfume.
Grows up to an altitude of 400 meters above sea level. Its growth does not require excessive sun exposure and it is not drought-tolerant. It usually grows wild on the edge of forests or in home yards. It prefers fertile clay soil with an acidic to alkaline pH.
Stem: Hard, grooved, without thorns.
Leaves: Compound, spirally arranged, with stalked leaflets, opposite, oval or oblong, pointed tip and base, smooth, shiny, green margin.
Flower: Compound, in the form of a raceme, fragrant, white, with a pungent, bitter, and warm taste. It emerges from the leaf axils or branch tips.
Fruit: Fleshy berry, round-oblong, green when young, orange to red when ripe, containing 2 seeds.
Propagation: Through seeds, layering (cangkok), and stem cuttings. Seed selection from seeds comes from fruit that has turned dark red.
Lowers blood cholesterol, remedy for dysentery, diarrhea, intestinal worms, swelling, improves blood circulation, rheumatism, reduces fever, treats urinary tract infections, and has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-obesity properties.
