Turmeric is a herb or spice native to Southeast Asia. It later spread to Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, and even Africa. Its roots, called rhizomes, are an important spice used in traditional medicine, health drinks, and as a natural food coloring. Almost everyone in Indonesia, India, and other Asian countries in general has consumed this spice, whether as a cooking spice, herbal medicine, health drink, or medicine to maintain health and beauty.

The fibrous roots are light brown.
The rhizome is cylindrical and thick, with dark yellow, orange-yellow, or reddish-orange bark.
The pseudostem is erect, rounded, rhizome-like, and yellowish-green.
The leaves are simple, elongated-lanceolate, with 3-8 leaflets, pinnate veins, even edges, and green.
The flowers are compound, tubular, emerging between the leaf sheaths. The bracts are pale green, ovate, 3-4 cm long. The small bracts are spiral and densely hairy, forming a pitcher, each containing a yellow-white flower.
Turmeric plants are propagated vegetatively using rhizomes. Conventional turmeric propagation has the disadvantage of being slow and time-consuming (Goyal et al., 2010).
