Philo Cadierei (Mutiara)
(Pilea Cadierei )
This is an annual herb with oval green leaves featuring silver patches on its foliage. Pilea cadierei is a species belonging to the Urticaceae family. The plant originates from North Africa, but can also be found in Indonesia; one of its distribution areas is Mount Prau.
All Pilea varieties are sensitive to cold temperatures, preferring a temperature range of 20–30 °C and an altitude requirement between 1–1,200 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.). They are susceptible to mealybugs, spider mites, leaf spot, and stem rot. When caring for the Aluminium Pilea, it is important to remember your climate zone.
Height: The plant reaches a height of up to 30 cm.
Stem: Soft and succulent.
Leaves: Oval-shaped with green and white patches, a wavy surface, serrated leaf edges, a blunt leaf base, a pointed tip, and curved venation.
Flower: Female flowers are located beneath the male flowers, colored white or whitish-green, with stamens equal in number to the stigmas.
Propagation: Miniature Aluminium Plant (Daun Mutiara) can be propagated by cuttings of young stems.
Other Methods: Seed sowing and air layering (cangkok).
Pilea cadierei is an ornamental foliage plant and is non-toxic to cats, dogs, and horses, making it safe to have around pets.
According to research by Zaichang et al. (2013), the leaf extract of Pilea cadierei using an ethanol solvent has a minimum antibacterial activity at a concentration of 12 ± 3% (4 mg/ml) against Escherichia coli bacteria.
Currently under investigation.
