Thursday, May 14, 2015 @ 0900 MDT: Well, we all had a great time yesterday at Pikes Peak, as you can tell in the photos seen HERE. Yes, it was cold, but this Keys boy survived somehow! *lol* Nobody was allowed to go higher than around 11,600 feet (between Glen Cove and Elk Park) due to the snow, but that still got us above the treeline and afforded quite the view! (We were also huffing and puffing for oxygen quite frequently at that altitude.) I would like to return at some point and make it all the way to the summit, but that will have to wait. We will need to move on today, and position ourselves for (hopefully) two final days of chasing before the Tour 1 chasers will be leaving us.
Tomorrow looks like a Nebraska chase, and then Saturday might be tough. The chase conditions look good, but we won't be able to go very far north because we will still have to make it back to Oklahome City in time to get chasers to their flights out on Sunday... some as early as 6 am. So with that in mind, my guess is that we probably won't venture beyond south central Kansas.
Anyway, here are the probabilistic forecasts for Friday and Saturday from the SPC:
Thursday, May 14, 2015 @ 2345 CDT: Today was just a travel day, and we made our way to Colby, KS. Tomorrow will begin our last opportunities for real storm chasing before the Tour 1 chasers depart and Tour 2 begins (on Sunday, May 17th). As much fun as we have been having on our non-chase days (See photos HERE!), I think everybody is ready to actually CHASE, so keep your fingers crossed that the next couple of days will be good ones for us!
Here's today's travel map:
