Colonisation

Some time in the future Mars will be colonised, when and how this will happen has been debated at great length.

The prospect of humans on Mars this century has served to once more focus people's thoughts on this.

Getting to Mars is obviously key to the start of Colonisation.

There have been many studies in the last century but since Elon Musk formed his company SpaceX in 2002 with the express goal of Mars Colonisation and to make Humans a truly multi planetary species with large self sustaining cities on Mars gave a big push towards the serious complication to Colonisation.

Some interesting thoughts on Mankind's possibilities for a second chance for a new human civilization.

Maybe many of these questions will not apply as Earth's government and Systems will play too large a role and a truly second chance to completely form a new human civilization can work, Maybe will need to wait for the advent of interstellar Colonisation were interference from Earth will be meaningless.

Mars: Flag, Time, calendar, Back and Forward contamination etc

Mars Time

One day on Mars is 2.7% longer than on Earth is 24 h 37 m 22.663 s (Sidereal day called a Martian Sol) while an Earth Sidereal Day is 24 h 39 m 35.244147 s (Sol for Earth)

One solution for time on Mars is to slow the Mars second by 2.7% called a "Mars clock"

Also the Mars year is about 686.98 Earth solar days, or 668.5991 sols. ( sidereal year, time for Mars to complete one orbit around the Sun) The Year date on Mars for colonists will most likely be different than Earths date as it will be important to synchronise with the seasons on Mars, therefore a completely new Mars calendar.

One proposed Martian calendar where a Mars year has 672 Martian days distributed into 24 months of 28 days (or 4 weeks of 7 days each); in skip years an entire week at the end of the twelfth month is omitted.

Words used to describe Mars days

yestersol for yesterday

tosol for today

Mars three versions of "tomorrow": "nextersol", "morrowsol", or "solmorrow"

With a new world so many other things could be changed, would a longer or shorter week be worth while, or 10 hours in a Martian day. Should mains electricity be 500Hz giving easy 1ms clocks, Will everyone need to learn English for emergencies or could there be a new easy language be used written/spoken. will signage be the same or new picture based symbols be used. Over time Mars will have its own vocabulary for everyday use as priorities will be different than on Earth. Will Oxygen, water and energy be a basic rights?
