The Range is operated by QinetiQ at 115,000km² is the largest weapons Test and Evaluation Range in Europe.

The Range is made up of four main sites:

    1. West Camp on the Isle of Benbecula;

    2. Rangehead and Range Control on the Isle of South Uist;

    3. St Kilda which lies 43 nautical miles of the North West of the Isle of Benbecula.

    4. radar based at RAF Clettraval on the Isle of North Uist

In 2015 an American Terrier-Orion two-stage rocket was launched to become the first vehicle to be launched into space from UK soil.

In 2017 it launched another American rocket into space for destruction test by another missile.

QinetiQ, who run the Hebrides range for the UK Ministry of Defence, say they have no plans to use it as a commercial spaceport.

But they do stress they have the expertise to support a spaceport anywhere in the UK.
