Sputnik
Soviet Sputnik program started development of artificial satellite on January 30, 1956.
Sputnik 1, launched on 4 October 1957 from the Soviet Union's rocket testing facility in the desert near Tyuratam in the Kazakh Republic, An aluminum 22-inch sphere with four spring-loaded whip antennae trailing, it weighed only 183 pounds and traveled an elliptical orbit that took it around the Earth every 96 minutes. It carried a small radio beacon that beeped at regular intervals and could by means of telemetry verify exact locations on the earth's surface.

Sputnik 2 launched on 3 November 1957
The second spacecraft launched into Earth orbit, and the first to carry an animal into orbit, a Soviet space dog named Laika.
Sputnik 3 launched on 15 May 1958
The Soviets officially called only three satellites Sputnik.
Korabl-Sputnik 4 was launched at 06:29:00 UTC on 9 March 1961, atop a Vostok-K carrier rocket flying from Site 1/5 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. It was successfully placed into low Earth orbit.
Korabl-Sputnik 2, also known as Sputnik 5 in the West, was a Soviet artificial satellite, and the third test flight of the Vostok spacecraft. It was the first spaceflight to send animals into orbit and return them safely back to Earth, including two Soviet space dogs, Belka and Strelka.
Sputnik 6 launched on 1 December 1960
Sputnik 7 launched on 4 February 1961
Sputnik 8 launched on 12 February 1961
Sputnik 9 launched on 8 March 1961
Sputnik 10 launched on 25 March 1961 This spacecraft was the fifth and last in a series of spacecraft designed as precursors to manned space flight. It carried a dummy astronaut and the dog Zvezdochka ("little star"), as well as the television system and other scientific apparatus. After one orbit, a successful recovery was made.
Sputnik 11 launched on 16 March 1962, refer to: Kosmos 1 - first Kosmos launch vehicle of any type to successfully place a satellite into orbit.
