Obsidium

Obsidium is a purplish-black metal that was developed on Aztlan around 1,000 years ago. It is created by alloying chilcanite with obsidian and chromium. It can be chiseled into the sharpest edges of any metal in the known galaxy, surpassing even raw obsidian, and lacking the brittleness that makes raw obsidian impossible to use in any weapons but the smallest knives. Obsidium looks very similar to obsidian, and it can be difficult for the naked eye to differentiate between the two. However, due to the rarity of chilcanite outside of a handful of worlds, it is not used very much industrially, instead mostly functioning as one of the two materials of choice for the scalpel-like blades of many traditional Aztlanian weapons, including the macuahuitl. Some outsiders use it in sword blades, but this is extremely rare due to the availability of much cheaper jadium, which has many of the same properties despite being a markedly different color.
