PERSONALITY

At the time of her introduction, Sarah is a confused and traumatized child who suddenly finds herself abandoned in the most dangerous wilderness in the entire galaxy to die. If it weren't for Yangarra to keep her company and give her a reason to keep going in that desert, she probably would have died from dehydration or exposure out there. While generally a friendly and easygoing but somewhat hyper child in her normal state, when she flies into a rage or her life is in danger, she will tap into Tate's mutation bestowed on her by the Lawbot.

In these rage states, her intelligence is heightened drastically, her reflexes are faster than a bullet, she gains access to an immense well of power that allows her to land hits on unfathomably powerful beings, even at a very young age (such as when she was able to damage Tate enough in his 1st form to compel him to transform, all while she was only 6 years old), and most notably, she loses sight of her morals and becomes ruthless and borderline sadistic (such as when she started cursing out Uhyahlanya and repeatedly blasting fireballs at him, while she was only four years old, to Weasel's shock and slight horror). However, once the danger has passed, she calms down or she tires herself out, Sarah reverts to her normal state.

While her rage states get her out of a lot of trouble, Sarah is still a scared child prone to fear. For example, when Sarah was being chased through the jungle by a hungry megalania, she thought she was about to die until her rage state kicked in and she was able to scare it off by blasting it with lightning.

While she hides this under her cheerful and easy-going demeanor, she feels extremely guilty for her parents' death, which she blames herself for due to the Lawbot's misinformation. Even as a child, she often finds herself waking up in a cold sweat remembering the smoldering ruins of her humpy and her parents' charred corpses. As she grew up, she eventually deduced that the Lawbot had lied to her about her parents' demise and had killed them herself.

Sarah, while cheerful to the point where she frequently annoys people, has a blunt side to her that often results in her stating the obvious, even if it's insulting to some people. She also is very friendly to animals, especially her pet Yangarra, whom she has forged an essentially inseparable bond with. Killing animals is something that very visibly bothers her, shown most notably when she was starving out in Yiri's outback and she tried to feed herself solely on wild plants and what she could scavenge from already-dead animals. Only when she ran out of these and had no other options but death did she kill and eat a small bunyip, the traumatic experience of which gave her nightmares for years. This love for animals is also what prompted Sarah to adopt Alinta as a joey, as leaving Alinta in her dead mother's pouch would have surely meant her death.

While Sarah is well-known for fearlessly and ruthlessly taking on absurdly powerful opponents in her rage states, she is averse to fighting in her normal state, and sometimes has been known to run scared from powerful opponents, such as Yengwayo before he enraged her by injuring Weasel. As a result, Sarah in her early years does not do well in single combat.

Other than her two parents, the first major relationship she forms is with the Lawbot, one of Dr. Setzer's elite robots and indirectly a servant of Tate. While the Lawbot gave her food, water, and a place to live, she was always cold and emotionally unavailable. She subjected Sarah to painful genetic experimentation, injecting her with a serum infused with Tate's genetic material that gave Sarah similar mutations. As a result, Sarah had her superpowers, but also a severe case of aichmophobia that persists even into her adult life. As a result of this aichmophobia, Sarah never fights with a sword or knife, instead using a boomerang, a spear (spears don't bother her since the point is far enough away from her body), or magic. As her time with the Lawbot went on, the Lawbot subjected Sarah to progressively more extreme and more abusive training to try to bring out the superpowers she was suposed to get from the injections. When the Lawbot realized that the only way to get Sarah to tap into her powers was to torture her, she gave up and abandoned her out in the desert to die. As Sarah grew up and began to fully understand and piece together the extent of the Lawbot's abusive behavior, she developed a vengeful vendetta against the artificial lifeform, although not nearly as pervasive as Taftenkhamun's revenge quest against Tate.

When Sarah met Weasel, the two developed a strong bond almost instantly and Weasel basically adopted Sarah as his child. The two very much enjoyed spending time together, however, things started to fray when Weasel had to spend more and more time away from her to prepare for his fight with Uhyahlanya. This resulted in Sarah stowing away on Weasel's ship when he went to Planet Squid to confront Uhyahlanya, putting Sarah in incredible danger. On Aurea, the situation became even worse, as Sarah was separated both from the friends she made on Arturia and Weasel, who had to spend less and less time with her so he could focus on ruling the planet. Eventually, Sarah began to develop some resentment towards Weasel for this, though she still likes Weasel overall for his more positive qualities.

King Arturius and Boudicca were great mentors who taught Sarah a great deal about controlling her magical power and helped her harness more of it without going into a rage state, though their relationship was never particularly strong due to Sarah spending much of her childhood on Aurea, far away from them.

BIO

Sarah is a Quoll born on Atlantea 5 years before Book 1. Born Woobanyan, she was born and raised in a village on the Mullaring Plateau on Yiri Island. Her life was relatively normal until at age 3, when she was playing outside and found an abandoned Quinkana nest in the dirt. There was only a single egg left, and Sarah decided to pick it up and take it home for her mother to cook it for breakfast. However, the egg started to hatch just when she was about to boil it. Out came a baby Quinkana, born right in their hut.

Sarah's mother urged her to release it back into the wild, but Sarah refused because it was too cute. However, Sarah gave in and was about to take the creature home when her mother noticed that the reptile was closely following Sarah without command and was already cozying up to her. She said that the Quinkana had already imprinted on her and could not survive in the wild, so Sarah and her family were going to have to raise it on their own. Sarah's father named the Quinkana "Yangarra", meaning "from the Earth".

However, things took a turn for the worse a year later when Sarah was 4 years old and playing outside with Yangarra. The Lawbot, one of the robots built by the evil Dr Setzer, was sent to "The Surface" (Atlantea's underwater civilizations' term for dry land) to do research on the civilizations inhabiting it, and was instructed to kidnap a young child from every civilization she encountered for research purposes. The Lawbot found and kidnapped Sarah and Yangarra after killing Sarah's parents and burning down their hut to make it look like they died in a cooking fire.

As Sarah was not there when her house was attacked, the Lawbot lied to her and explained that she was a bot sent by Yiri Island's child protective services to pick her up after her parents died in a cooking fire. As a result, Sarah blamed herself for the death of her parents, claiming she could have done something if she was there. One of the first thing the Lawbot had Sarah do was make traditional Yiri weapons, such as the nulla nulla club, Yiri spear, woomera spear thrower, boomerang, and wooden shield. While Sarah had no experience with making the weapons herself, she had seen her father repairing hunting weapons and was able to replicate them pretty well from memory.

Most importantly, at some point during her time with the Lawbot, Sarah was subjected to genetic experimentation on the orders of Dr. Setzer as part of his project to create the ultimate warrior who he would eventually use to overthrow both Tate and the Ishgas and rule the galaxy for himself. Tate's mutant genes responsible for his incredible magical power and villainous personality were inserted into Sarah's genetic profile, but Dr. Setzer mangled some of the genes during the process, resulting in Sarah being unable to access them except during periods of extreme stress, sadness or anger.

Satisfied, the Lawbot tried to get Sarah to teach her more about Yiri culture, but Sarah was too young to teach her much. Angered and disappointed in her, the Lawbot simply abandoned Sarah and Yangarra one night when she was around 4 and 1/2 in an alleyway in the Yiri Island capital of Jubenar with only the clothes on her back and the weapons she made, while the Lawbot set out to kidnap an older Yiri. She was eventually found by a group of shady merchants, who took her along on a trading run to the port city of Olynthaseia on Aurea. However, Sarah proved to be such a feisty and problematic child that the merchants decided to sell her into slavery just to get rid of her because she was being so annoying.

Sarah's new slave owner took her to the city of Kerkapeze, where he tried to force her to help out around the house, but Sarah, rebellious as ever, managed to escape into the city and become a street rat. It was here that she lived for the next six or so months, surviving off of what food scraps she could find or steal. However, things started to change when she tried to steal food from the wrong people.

Not knowing that he was king, Sarah tried to mug Weasel while he, his friends, and his army were on their way through the city to find Rhys. Once she realized who Weasel was, she thought she was dead for sure, but what Sarah tried to do reminded Weasel of the stunt he once pulled on King Arturius on Arturia, and he felt sorry for her. Much to the chagrin of his friends, Weasel decided to take Sarah with them, at least until they could "find something to do with her".

During major battles, Sarah would usually just hide for her own safety, with the one exception of when she saw her friends Weasel and Ryan struggling against Rhys, activating her hidden powers. She distracted Rhys with a powerful and completely unexpected use of Astral Lightning, an act which may have saved Weasel's life. In addition, Sarah was able to identify the Genyornis egg sitting on Rhys's desk, since she recognized it from her childhood on Yiri.

During the final battle with Rhys, when she saw Weasel on the verge of defeat, her hidden powers activated again, allowing her to throw a boomerang much further and faster than any 5-year-old should, distracting Rhys long enough for Weasel to make the finishing blow.

After the events of Rhys's invasion, Sarah was placed under the care of Neza, who recognized that her hidden power applied to both physical and magical combat and began subjecting her to a rigorous training regimen, hoping to unlock at least some of her hidden power.

A year later, when Spjot Ragnarsson attacked, Sarah's training enabled her to be useful at times (usually via boomerang throws) without becoming enraged, but she still had to become enraged and tap into her hidden power to use any Magic. When Spjot attacked Weasel's palace and easily defeated Weasel and all of his friends, they severely injured Neza, triggering Sarah's hidden power and causing her to use Rock Magic to collapse the ceiling on a hallway, buying time for Weasel and his friends to escape.

Whenever Sarah used Astral Magic, her technique was very sloppy and she had very little control over what she actually did, as she had no conscious knowledge of Astral Magic or how it worked. In addition, whenever Sarah tapped into her hidden power, her personality would noticeably change, going from that of a cheery, quirky child to that of a sadistic, cold-blooded killer and back in the span of usually no more than a minute.

When Taftenkhamun joined Weasel and his friends, he became the closest thing Sarah had to a father figure since her parents were killed, especially after the death of Fundisa Ironhoof at the hands of Whelan and Ombra, an event that prompted her to tap into her hidden power and nearly kill them both with Astral Lightning.

Over the next couple of years as Weasel and his friends traveled to various planets with Sarah in tow, she gradually became stronger and was able to gain access to much of her hidden potential over time, such as when she learned Astral Magic on Planet Squid while Weasel and his friends did the same. Due to her age, however, her base magic skills were somewhat inferior to those of Weasel and his friends, along with the enemies she would be facing, and would only be of much use on the battlefield when her rage was triggered. However, when she was enraged enough to tap into her hidden potential, her powers would still soar through the roof, strengthening her to the point that she could, for very short periods of time, match or possibly beat opponents that were wiping the floor with Weasel and his friends. One example of this is the battle against Tate on Planet Squid, when Sarah became so angry watching Tate easily defeat Weasel and his friends that she was able to actually draw blood with a Rock Magic hit, prompting Tate to ascend to his 2nd form for the first time since Iteru in order to contain her outburst.

However, Sarah's personality changes during these outbursts soon began to scare everyone around her when she contemplated killing civilians on Aztlan after watching Tate kill the King of the Avians. However, her most notable accomplishment during this stage of her childhood was when she got so angry with Tate and the Horn of Huitzilopochtli for setting Xibalba on Aztlan that she brutally slew the Horn of Huitzilopochtli, one of the most powerful people to ever hail from Aztlan, with a blast of Storm Magic.
