Focus on the Unseen
“We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
2 Corinthians 4:18
Humans have a difficult time focusing on the unseen. It is so much easier to concentrate on the here and now; what is visible to our eyes. But the here and now is transient; it is temporary, it will not last. Wealth, pleasure, and fame will all fade with time. Pain, sorrow and tears will soon vanish as well. Sickness and disease will soon cease. The evils of poverty, the hungry child, and the homeless man will soon give way to the joys of the kingdom. To spend time worrying about the trials of life is foolishness. They can be endured but a little longer before we shall be forever beyond their reach! Many spend time focusing on their possessions; these too will become as dust. The most spectacular home will deteriorate, the most magnificent city will fall to ruin, and the most exquisite earthly treasure will soon come to an end: nothing from this world can last for long. We will soon leave all that this world has to offer us for a better place. So, to fix our eyes on these things would be an utter waste of time. It is the unseen the glories of heaven that will last forever. It is those things which are eternal in which we need to place our hope and spend our energies. God is eternal; fix your eyes on Him and His intense love for you. It is prudent to fix our affections supremely on Christ, also, and all that he has offered us: eternal life with him in the heavens. The joys of heaven are eternal. There shall be no end to the joys of heaven, and if we keep our eyes fixed on them now, we will be able to taste them now in this life. The future will only get better and better, for the joys of heaven will not only endure, they will increase while the ages continue on for all eternity.
Father, help us to take our focus off of our pains and hurts. Your Word says that sorrow endures for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Help us to focus on that joy and what is to come. Help us to live in that hope. Let us fix our eyes on the eternal that the temporary will have no hold on us. Let us live a life of joy in you today and may it only increase as each day passes. Amen
