Our Refuge and Strength
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." Psalms 46:1
Peace is something we all long for. Having peace does not mean that there will be no trouble in our lives. Quite to the contrary, the very definition of peace implies there will be. Peace is defined as "inner contentment or serenity." True peace is inner contentment when the storms are raging, for anyone can be content when life is good and all around us is calm. Peace can be ours, true peace, if we take our refuge in God. The Psalm goes on in verse 2 and 3 to say, "Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging." No, peace will be ours even when the world around us is collapsing. We will have no fear because "God is our refuge and strength." There is nothing in this life that will give us the assurance that God can. He has everything in His control. He knows all about the storms in our lives. In fact, He placed them there for a purpose. We must trust Him. When fear and uncertainty take hold of us, we must run to Him for refuge. In the arms of our Lord we are safe from any storm. We belong to the One who will keep us safe in the storm and when we throw ourselves into His arms, peace, true peace, will be ours.
Thank you, Father, for the storms you have placed in my life. Sometimes I let them overwhelm me and I am so full of fear. Help me, Father, to run to you as soon as the storm clouds appear. I know I will be safe in your arms. You are the only one who can truly help me through the trouble in my life. Thank you for always being there, ready and waiting. Thank you for your peace that passeth all understanding! Amen.
