Blessed are the Meek
“Blessed are the meek.” Matthew 5:5
The word meek means focused. It is the word used to describe a domesticated stallion. It means power under control. Funny, that’s not how I always thought of the word meek. I think of a meek person as being mild mannered or quiet and perhaps even submissive, but the Greek word here brings a new meaning. It means someone who is submissive by choice. Someone who chooses his or her focus. It’s really quite a good word for the Christian. Christians should not be wimpy, but they can choose to be meek. Jesus was meek; there is no question about that. When I think of Jesus and his meekness, I think of Jesus before Pilate, quiet, as a sheep led to the slaughter. He was that way by choice. Surely, he had all the power to turn that place upside down, similar to what he did in the temple with the money changers, but it was not the time or place for that. This was the time for meekness: power under control. And so he stood before his accusers, dumb. What a lesson there is for us! We need to learn to control our tongues more, do less defending of ourselves and more controlling of our flesh. We need to quietly submit to God and let him have control of our hearts, that this scripture can be fulfilled in us. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth!
Father, we like to be in control and yet we know that is not what You want from us. Help us to yield control to You. Make us like a domesticated stallion, yielding control to you that we might be used to further the Kingdom. It is not an easy thing to become meek, so work your miracle in our lives. Make us like Jesus: controlled by you. Focus our attention of the eternal so that we might inherit the earth. Amen
