What Is That in Thine Hand?
"Then the LORD said to him, "What is that in thine hand?"" Exodus 4:2
When God first spoke with Moses after He fled Egypt and asked him to return to be His spokesman, Moses was uncertain of himself. Spending 40 years in isolation with a bunch of sheep had chipped away at his self-confidence. When God asked him what was in his hand, Moses' response was that it was a staff, a simple shepherding tool; but the Lord showed Moses what power there was in that staff when used for the Lord. At that moment, He turned it into a snake, and later he used it to bring all the plagues upon Egypt. He used it to part the Red Sea to lead his people to freedom. It was an ordinary staff: it had no power of itself. The power lay in using that ordinary staff in the service of God. When we take the time to look at what is in our hands and use whatever we might find there in the service of God, there is no limit to what miracles can be wrought. Let each of us this day look to see what the Lord has placed in our hands and then let us go forth and use it to His glory and honor.
Father, so often we are busy looking at what is in our brother’s hand and wishing we had that instrument. Help us to keep our focus on the gifts that You have given to us. Reveal what is in our hand and then give us the courage to go forth and use it to Your glory and honor. Amen
